Re: Law Faculty Recovery plan
Dear students hope this communique finds you in good spirit during these uncertain times that we are facing as the Nelson Mandela community and country as a whole.
This communique serves as clarity about the latest developments from the Faculty.
As most of you know there are 2 proposed Pathways by the institution to make up for the lost time or recovery of the first semester. I, however, took it upon myself to seek more clarity from Prof A Govindjee (Law Faculty Executive Dean ) about how we as a faculty will fit in this strategy and how it will work.
Access to the Internet
-Due to the impact of the COVID-19 on the Universityβs academic year, cellular service providers have offered to zero-rate certain learning websites for all universities. This means a user can access content via their cellular service at no cost.
Pathway 1
- It basically is E-learning where everything will be done online.
- It is expected that it will commence from the 28 April and there will be an orientation on how to use it or how it will work.
Pathway 2
- This is to cater for those who don't have resources e.g Gadgets that can be used to access the internet, poor network connection and so on
- It will only be implemented after the Lockdown where the institution will look at students moving back on Campus residents and use University resources but it will still be online learning. There will still be no contact learning as social distancing will still have to be implemented after the lockdown.
Assessments
- In light of all faculties not being able to take the same approach the way in which assessments will be carried out will vary between institutions.
- The proposed means of assessment in the law faculty is as follows:
Students will have to do a minimum of 2 continuous assessments (lectures will give guidance on how in order to suit the desired outcome of each respective module). An example is an online quiz and a drafting assignment.
The evaluation of marks will also be based on 3 factors; not meeting requirements, meeting requirements and exceeding the requirements. On this basis, no marks will be awarded but rather an "outcome".
In the event of having already written a test before the lockdown one will be allowed to do the new assessment if you have failed.
- The Dean is further engaging with publishing houses to acquire licensing for digital textbooks we hope his efforts in this regard will be fruitful.
In essence, the two pathways have been created not to prejudice any disadvantaged student but rather to ensure that there is a fair outcome and all students are assisted with resources according to there needs.
I hope and pray that you all stay safe and adhere to Lockdown rules. Stay home, sanitize and familiarize yourself with the symptoms of COVID 19 and always remember the best cure that we have as of yet to fight the Pandemic is to stay indoors so as to fight it at our doorsteps and gates.
Kind Regards
