Attention eThekwini Property Owners: Double-check your municipal account

Every property in eThekwini is billed for the following services:
- Rates
- Electricity
- Water
- Refuse removal (DSW)

These charges may appear under separate account numbers, so do not assume everything is consolidated on one bill under one account number. If your current municipal account does not reflect all four services, you should contact eThekwini Municipality to ensure you receive all relevant accounts.

Note for sectional title owners: Some schemes are billed directly for water, which is then recovered through your monthly levies. Make sure you understand how your property is billed so you are not caught off guard.

⚠️ Important: If additional accounts are only discovered during the sale of your property, you will still be responsible for any outstanding amounts, even if you were not aware of them or did not receive the bills.

📜 Marital regime matters
Before getting married, couples in South Africa choose one of these regimes:
1. In community of property – all assets and debts are shared equally
2. Out of community of property with accrual – each party keeps their own assets acquired before the marriage, but shares growth during the marriage
3. Out of community of property without accrual – all assets remain separate
✅ The marital regime directly affects what happens in the event of death or divorce.
✅ If no antenuptial contract is signed, the marriage defaults to in community of property.

✍️ Update (or create) your will
• Marriage doesn’t automatically change your will
• If your spouse isn’t named, they may not inherit as you intended
• Consider how you’d like to provide for your spouse (and children) if something happens

👨‍👩‍👧 Blended families need special attention
If you or your spouse have children from a previous relationship, a clear estate plan protects everyone’s interests and avoids future disputes.

👥 Nominate legal guardians
If something happens to you, who will care for your child?
✅ Without a will, the courts may decide.
✅ With a will, you decide who your child’s guardian should be.

💰 Consider setting up a trust

✅ A testamentary trust can protect their inheritance until they’re old enough
