The South African Reserve Bank has officially released two new commemorative R2 coins into circulation, and they carry a massive amount of history.
For the very first time in our nation's history, our everyday currency features and honours South African women:
🇿🇦 Charlotte Maxeke:celebrating 125 years since she became the first Black South African woman to earn a university degree
🇿🇦 The 1956 Women’s March:marking 70 years since 20,000 women stood together at the Union Buildings
These aren't just rare collectors' items hidden away in vaults; they are ordinary legal tender moving through local cash registers right now.
The Reserve Bank specifically released them so they could pass from person to person, keeping these incredible stories alive in our everyday communities.
Keep an eye on your change next time you visit your favourite Midlands shops...you might just hold a piece of history in your hand!
