Do you employ a domestic worker?

Domestic workers are now considered formal employees under the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA). How does this effect you? In April 2023 the changes were signed into law, meaning that you as a domestic worker Employer must comply.

Through the new Act the Compensation Fund will start accepting claims from domestic workers and their dependents for injuries and/or deaths resulting from workplace accidents. The Act also identifies the “main employer” of a domestic worker and holds them accountable for any injuries sustained.

To cover workers against Occupational Diseases, Injuries and Death, employers must register with the Compensation Fund and must submit annual returns. The closing date for the annual return for the period 2022 was extended until 30 June 2023, and all domestic employers must register and submit their return.

All domestic workers, that works more than 27 hours per month must be registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund and monthly contribution and returns must be submitted to the fund.
