The Legal Practice Council (LPC) congratulates Justice Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her outstanding contribution to peace, human rights and international justice. Her achievement is a moment of immense pride for South Africa and affirms the vital role of the legal profession in advancing human dignity, equality, accountability and the rule of law. Having practised law during apartheid and contributed significantly to South Africa’s judiciary, Justice Pillay’s career reflects courage, integrity and an unwavering commitment to justice, particularly for the most vulnerable.

Through her work at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the International Criminal Court and as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Justice Pillay has made a lasting contribution to international justice and accountability for human rights violations. Her recognition reinforces the principle that no one is above the law and reminds us that justice must serve humanity and protect the rights of all. The LPC joins the legal profession and the broader South African community in celebrating this well-deserved honour, which serves as an inspiration to current and future generations of legal practitioners to use the law as an instrument of positive social change and to build a more just, equal and peaceful world.
