Think living together for years means you automatically have the same legal rights as a married couple? Think again.

In South Africa, there is no legal status known as a “common-law marriage.” Simply living together does not automatically mean you inherit your partner’s property or assets if they pass away without a Will.

The reality:
- If the property is in their name, it doesn’t automatically become yours.
- You aren’t automatically an heir under the Intestate Succession Act.
- A Cohabitation Agreement and a valid Will can help put your wishes and arrangements in writing.

Don’t leave important decisions to assumptions. If it matters to you, get it in writing.
