Before you deregister, answer this properly:

• Can you lose input VAT claims?
• Will clients be affected?
• Can you fund the exit VAT?

Because under the Value-Added Tax Act 89 of 1991, deregistration can trigger VAT on your assets. That’s immediate cash out. This isn’t admin — it’s exposure.

We’ve seen businesses lose good clients over VAT — not because of bad service, but because of bad decisions. They deregistered. Clients couldn’t claim VAT. Procurement flagged it. That’s all it takes. This isn’t admin. This is positioning.

VAT decisions come down to one thing: Who pays your invoices? If your answer is “other VAT vendors,” you need to think twice before deregistering. You’re not removing tax.

You’re shifting the burden. And in competitive markets, that matters more than people realise.

The voluntary VAT threshold moved from R50k to R120k. Small change? Not really. If you’re investing upfront — equipment, setup, infrastructure — registering early means you can claim that VAT back.

Under the Value-Added Tax Act 89 of 1991, that’s input tax recovery — and it directly impacts cash flow. For startups, this isn’t compliance.

It’s funding. 👉 https://apaa.co.za/ 👇 Are you registered — or waiting too long?

If you’re a consultant or service business with low overheads, this change could work in your favour.

Simple in theory:
• Drop your price by 15%
• Or keep it and increase margin

But real life isn’t theory. What happens to your input VAT claims? What happens to your positioning? At APA Africa, this is where we see the difference between “tax advice” and real strategy.

This VAT threshold didn’t increase because government felt generous. It increased because the cost of running a business has gone through the roof since 2009.

This change is overdue. But here’s the thing — it doesn’t automatically benefit you. It gives you a choice. And bad decisions at this point are expensive.

👉 Do you actually know which side of this change you should be on? https://apaa.co.za/

Most people want out of VAT because of admin. But VAT isn’t just admin — it’s law. It’s governed by the Value-Added Tax Act 89 of 1991, and deregistration isn’t automatic.

You apply, and South African Revenue Service must approve it. Now add the 2026 threshold change: Just because you can fall below R2.3m doesn’t mean you should deregister.

Because when you do:
• You lose input VAT claims
• You trigger VAT on your assets
• You may price yourself out of B2B work

That’s not admin relief — that’s a financial decision.

Here’s the part nobody tells you about VAT deregistration: The exit bill. South African Revenue Service treats it like you’ve sold your business to yourself.

Your assets? Taxed. Your equipment? Taxed. Your stock? Taxed.
It’s called a deemed supply, and it catches people off guard every time.

We’ve seen businesses deregister… then scramble to fund the VAT.

Everyone’s celebrating the new VAT threshold like it’s a tax break.

It’s not. It’s a decision point. For the first time in 17 years, South African Revenue Service moved the line from R1m to R2.3m — and I’m already seeing businesses rush to deregister. That’s how mistakes happen. At APA Africa, we’re not asking “can you deregister?”

We’re asking “should you?” If you haven’t run the numbers properly, you’re guessing.

Fairness is no longer procedural — it’s strategic The shift in how fairness is assessed is one of the most important developments in employment law. It’s no longer enough to follow the process.

The question now is:
Was the decision reasonable in the circumstances?

That changes everything. It means:
* Process alone won’t protect you
* Decisions must be proportionate
* You need to anticipate how your actions will be interpreted

Fairness isn’t something you argue at the end. It’s something you build into the decision from the start.
