Reyana is a Wits University Law graduate and is currently enrolled there for her Masters in Law (LLM) in the field of Labour Law. She also has a Certificate in Compliance Management and a Diploma in Banking from the University of Johannesburg. She has passed the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Compliance Officer examination and she is a member of the Compliance Institute of South Africa. She has more than 16 years combined legal, regulatory and commercial experience gained from having occupied senior roles in legal practice and thereafter in leading local and international investment banks, including Rand Merchant Bank, UBS, Barclays Bank, and Deutsche Bank (in the Dubai International Financial Centre). She has worked in South Africa and the Middle East and travelled extensively to London and Europe in the ex*****on of her duties. Her experience extends beyond mere book knowledge. She has extensive practical legal experience which is combined with a global perspective and a practical understanding of commercial life gained from exposure to real time, factually complex scenarios and products. This has honed her technical and analytical skills and informs her approach to providing pragmatic legal services that makes business sense.

Illegal aliens in legitimate employment in South Africa are protected by our labour legislation and can therefore approach the CCMA, notwithstanding their "illegal" status for relief if an unfair labour practice is perpetrated against them.

In a recent decision of the Labour Court, it ruled that the dismissal of Rastafarians from their employ for refusing to cut their dreadlocks was unfair and discriminatory on the basis that the instruction to cut their hair infringed their right to freedom of religion.

The judicial attachment and sale of immovable property to satisfy a judgement debt is no longer a foregone conclusion. Warrants of Ex*****on against immovable property can only be granted by a Judge in Chambers and could successfully be opposed on constitutional grounds in the appropriate circumstances.

South African law permits boys to get married at 18 and girls at 15 but only with parental consent. Marriages below this marriageable age requires Ministerial consent and is null and void without it.

The registration of new designs protects the design in South Africa for 15 years in respect of an aesthetic design and 10 years in respect of a functional design, and gives the designer priority to register it within six months in other countries that are party to the designs convention. A designer must apply for the design to be registered before selling or offering for sale in South Africa any articles made to that design.

An airline, like a railway or bus company, enters into a contract with you when you buy a ticket. It is normally only after you have checked in and collected your boarding card that the airline has a legal responsibility to carry you on a particular flight. You can still be refused permission to board the aircraft if you are unfit to travel i.e. if you are drunk, under the influence of drugs or ill, are disorderly and likely to be a nuisance to other passengers.

The law protects reputations and provides that the unjustified publication - oral and written - of anything damaging to a reputation (defamation of character) may allow the injured person to claim damages. This action provides for financial compensation (damages) for any person whose reputation has been damaged - unless the person who published the defamatory remarks can justify having done so.
