A skilled listener is more effective in managing conflict effectively. Some basic tips to help:

• open yourself to the message - purposefully and mindfully place yourself in the listening space with all your sensors
• listening is about receiving the words and underlying messages from the speaker
• understand the message being shared by asking for clarity, paraphrasing and avoiding assumptions
• show empathy and aknowledge emotion
•formulate a response carefully and relevant to the stage of the discussion
• respond clearly and simply
