SARS is sometimes a dreaded topic of discussion in deceased estate administration.

They’re an admin heavy part of the process but once you have an idea of how to handle the admin from the beginning, and have the right tax team behind you, it doesn’t seem so daunting.

Link to our blog where we unpack a few educational tips on how this is managed in a deceased estate landscape.

A popular question when clients instruct our office to attend to the administration of an estate and one that does not have a definitive answer: how long will it take to wind up an estate?

Here we break down timelines - realistically.

We’ve also included our blog discussing common delays in estates.

If you feel an estate of a loved one is not quite matching a realistic timeline, reach out to us and we can assess it.

In the rush of today, small businesses have never had their standard contracts reviewed.
Not because they don't care, but because it never feels urgent.

Until it does.

A client can't pay and there's no clear clause covering the remedy. A supplier disappears and the contract is silent on liability. An employee dispute arises and the written agreement says something different to what was understood.

The contracts most owner-managed businesses operate on were either downloaded from the internet, copied from a supplier, or drafted years ago and never updated.

The cost of a contract review is a fraction of what any one of these disputes costs to resolve.

We offer a no-obligation contract review for businesses. We are a small business ourselves and understand the big impact it ca have when something that should have been taken care of, isn't.

Our second instalment of our educational series has been uploaded.

Most people dealing with a deceased estate hear the phrase "Master of the High Court" and have no idea what it means.

Here's the plain-language answer:

The Master's Office is the government body that supervises every deceased estate in South Africa. They appoint executors (and can remove them), approve the final accounts, and protect the interests of heirs, creditors, and anyone else with a claim on the estate.

Nothing significant happens in a deceased estate without the Master's knowledge, including the distribution of assets to heirs.

If you're waiting on an estate and wondering why things are taking time, the Master's Office is usually part of the answer.

We've written a full plain-language guide on this at cdtattorneys.co.za. Link below.
