South Africa's heritage isn't only found in its languages, cultures and traditions. It is also found in the country's long-standing pursuit of justice, equality, dignity and freedom. We honour that heritage by helping to advance access to justice.

As we celebrate Heritage Day, we reflect on our commitment, embodied in the work of our Pro Bono team and in our broader efforts to strengthen access to justice for communities today and for generations to come.

Dakalo Singo considers how access to justice can help strengthen the ties that bind us, https://werksmans.com/expressing-our-heritage-through-access-to-justice/, while Naledi Motsiri and Nothando Nyoni reflect on the legal and social legacy we leave for future generations, https://werksmans.com/what-are-we-leaving-behind-the-law-our-heritage-and-the-south-africa-we-owe-our-children/.

The Labour Appeal Court has reaffirmed that substantive and procedural fairness are distinct principles in dismissal law. In Universal Product Network (Pty) Ltd v Commissioner Mbatsana NO and Others, the Court confirmed that even serious procedural defects do not erase an otherwise fair reason for dismissal or automatically justify reinstatement.

Bradley Workman-Davies examines the judgment and the practical implications for employers, highlighting that procedural fairness remains a statutory requirement, https://werksmans.com/bad-process-doesnt-make-a-good-dismissal-bad-lac-draws-a-clear-line-between-procedure-and-substance/.

Women's Month is an opportunity to recognise the women who shape our workplaces, communities and country through their resilience, leadership and contribution.

As part of our Women's Month celebrations, we're honoured to share Werks ICONIC: A Women's Edition, a special digital magazine featuring a some of the women leading different areas of Werksmans.

Through personal reflections, experiences and lessons learnt, they share what has shaped their careers, their approach to leadership and the values that guide them. More than a collection of personal stories, this edition offers a perspective beyond the day-to-day, providing an opportunity to get to know the people behind the professional titles.

South African labour law is frequently viewed through the prism of employee protection. As a result, a common misconception has emerged that South African labour law leaves employers powerless to manage risk, enforce standards, and protect commercial sustainability.

This is not the law.
