Today, our firm registered a property transfer that means more to me than another completed matter.
We received instructions at the end of July. The sellers lived overseas, and SARS queried the property value, requiring independent valuation evidence. Both were firsts for the two staff members attending to the transfer.
They worked through the requirements under my supervision. After lodgment, we received no rejection or preparation notes. Today, 6 October, the property registered. I am proud of them.
But shortly before registration, a small administrative misunderstanding with the bond registration attorneys led to an unpleasant exchange. When I intervened, I was told I should be using “experienced” staff who knew what they were doing.
Initially, I took those words to heart. I questioned myself and my decision to employ people still learning. I prayed about it that night.
By morning, something in me said: no man. I refuse!
How will people become experienced if nobody gives them the opportunity to learn?
In South Africa, where exclusion has shaped access to professions, meaningful opportunities matter. Giving a graduate exposure to conveyancing and property law can open a door that might otherwise remain closed.
My responsibility is to supervise, teach, correct mistakes and protect our clients. Developing people is part of that responsibility.
I will continue creating opportunities for graduates to gain experience in this field, while expecting diligence, accountability and a willingness to learn.
