THE MOST DANGEROUS WEAKNESS IN LEGAL PRACTICE.

Most newly opened practice think their biggest problem is:

- Lack of clients

- Lack of experience

- Lack of exposure

It is not.

It is this:

Trying to be a “good person” at the expense of being a professional.

Let me be blunt.

If you:

- Entertain clients who can’t afford you.

- Accept “I’ll pay later” arrangements without structure.

- Allow consultations to exceed agreed time

- Struggle to say NO

You are not being kind.

You are weakening your practice.

Here is the truth most won’t say:

- Clients do not respect kindness. They respect structure.

The moment your:

- Fees become negotiable

- Time becomes flexible

- Process becomes optional

- Your authority is compromised.

This is where many attorneys get it wrong.

They think: “I don’t want to seem harsh.”

But what clients actually see is:

- Lack of control

- Lack of systems

- Lack of confidence

Let me reframe it:

This is not a personality issue.

It is a boundary problem in a profession that demands controlled access.

If you want to survive (and grow) in this profession, adopt this immediately:

Consultation is billable. No exceptions.

No payment = No work.

If it is not scheduled, it is not attended to.

Your policies must speak louder than your emotions.

Young firms suffer the most from this.

Because you want to:

- Prove yourself

- Help everyone

- Build relationships

But what you end up building is:

- Overwork.

- Underpayment.

- Burnout.

Let me leave you with this:

- You can be respectful without being accessible.

- You can be empathetic without being exploited.

- You can be professional without being permissive.

Fix this early or it will cost you your practice.
