There are two types of ESTATE appointments from the Master of the High Court to enable a family to wind up a deceased estate. If an estate has assets valued less that R250 000, then the local Magistrates Court can assist with the issue of a LETTER OF AUTHORITY, and an attorney might NOT be necessary. If the estate assets are valued MORE than R250 000 a LETTER OF EXECUTORSHIP is required which can be issued by the Master of the High Court of the area where you live, and an attorney might be necessary to assist in the process. Friday fun fact: your assets are NOT lost to the state if you die without a will. There is an entire act called the "INTESTATE SUCCESSION ACT" which dictates in which order your close family must inherit. It's just that if you did not appoint trustees in a will to look after your minor children's money, the government Guardians Fund gets to look after it and the survining parent can do nothing about it besides claim expenses. It's a problem. Get your will up to date.
