Today we celebrate the women who keep the wheels turning behind the scenes.

Shereen and Sharn are two very special people who are an integral part of my practice and everyday life.

Their dedication, loyalty, professionalism and care go far beyond what is written in a job description. They are the people who keep the details in order, make sure things run smoothly and bring their own warmth and commitment to everything they do.

But what makes our relationship particularly special is that, over the years, Shereen and Sharn have become so much more than colleagues. We have shared many of life’s moments, celebrations and challenges and I have been privileged to become close with their families, just as they have become part of mine.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have these two wonderful women in my life and in my practice. Their contribution is immeasurable and their presence is truly valued.

So today, on Secretaries’ Day, I want to shine a light on Shereen and Sharn and say a heartfelt thank you for everything they do and, more importantly, for the wonderful women they are.

Happy Secretaries’ Day! 🌷

Thank you to Highway Mail for helping to bring this conversation to a wider audience during Women’s Month.

In my more than 30 years of practising family law, I have seen first hand how understanding their rights can give women greater confidence and a stronger sense of empowerment, particularly when facing difficult circumstances.

When women understand their legal rights and take proactive steps to protect themselves and their families, they place themselves in a stronger position to face whatever life may bring.

Legal literacy is not just about knowing the law. It is about building confidence, protecting your future, and making informed decisions every step of the way.

The legal system can seem overwhelming, particularly for someone experiencing a stressful periods of their life. That's why education is so important.

𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀

As we reflect on National Women’s Day and the significance of Women’s Month it's an opportunity to reflect on the many ways we can support and empower women. For me, the most important is ensuring that women understand their legal rights and know where to turn when they need guidance.

I was honoured to recently share my thoughts with The Citizen News Highway Mail on why legal literacy is such an important part of women’s empowerment.

Throughout my career in family law, I have seen how understanding your legal rights can make a profound difference, particularly when facing major life decisions or difficult circumstances.

Whether it’s marriage, buying a home, having children, planning your estate or navigating a family dispute, being informed can help you make decisions that protect both yourself and your family.

As South Africa celebrates Women's Month, a legal expert say women should invest in understanding the legal protections available to them.

Some evenings are simply unforgettable, and Christmas in July at the Cargo Hold was certainly one of them! 🎄✨

On 23 July, I had the pleasure of attending a wonderful Chaine des Rotisseurs - KZN evening at the Cargo Hold at uShaka, together with my mom Charlotte Abro, Dr Bill Nortjie, Dr Bonnie Smithyman, Andy Barky and Ruby Barky.

We began with a walk through the aquarium after dark, and what an experience that was! Seeing the underwater world illuminated at night was truly magical!

Then came the main event: an incredible sensory wine tasting followed by dinner, with wines from Nederburg beautifully paired with Chef Warren’s food.

The sensory tasting was particularly entertaining! We were given earphones and eye masks, and, accompanied by music, had to identify different combinations of food and wine - without seeing or hearing what was being served. Let’s just say quite a few of us were confidently… completely wrong! 😂

I managed to identify the first wine and two of the foods correctly, which I think tells you exactly where my priorities lie! 🍷😉

Andy Barky, my guest and wine connoisseur and sommelier, was in a league of his own - identifying every wine correctly and even guessing some of the correct vintages! So very impressive!

It was a beautiful evening of good food, wonderful wine, laughter, friendship and a little festive magic, exactly what the Chaîne does so well.

There's always something new to learn in family law and I truly value every opportunity to engage with colleagues from around the world.

Yesterday, I joined a fascinating International Academy of Family Lawyers Africa webinar on Child Relocation and the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction.

It was an insightful discussion about the legal and practical challenges that arise when children are relocated across international borders, with a strong focus on protecting children's best interests while navigating complex issues of parental rights, jurisdiction and international cooperation.

It was also wonderful to connect with fellow IAFL members across Africa as we continue working towards establishing an official African chapter of the IAFL. This is an exciting step forward and we are hopeful that our application will be considered at the AGM in September.

Ongoing learning and collaboration like this is so important. It helps ensure that, as legal practitioners, we remain informed, connected and equipped to provide the very best guidance to the families we serve.

This past Mandela Day, my team and I had the pleasure of joining the Union of Jewish Women - South Africa for their annual sandwich making drive held at The Durban Jewish Club.

It was a wonderful morning filled with fun, fellowship and a shared commitment to giving back.

My team's sandwiches and contributions were delivered to Dr Julie Ambler and her incredible team at Umduduzi Hospice, a fabulous NGO that provides compassionate care, dignity and comfort to seriously ill children and their loved ones.

A heartfelt thank you to the Union of Jewish Women KZN for organising this special initiative, to my team and to everyone else who volunteered their time and energy to make it such a memorable morning.

When families find themselves in conflict, it is often the children who carry the heaviest burden.

I recently contributed to The Independent on Saturday's article, "𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮'𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀."

As I shared in the article:

"Child protection is not only about protecting children from physical or sexual abuse. It is also about protecting them from the emotional, psychological and financial harm that can arise when family disputes become prolonged, hostile, or are used as a tool to control or punish the other parent."

Every child deserves stability, security and the opportunity to maintain healthy relationships with both parents whenever it is safe and in their best interests. Behind every family law matter is a child whose future is being shaped by the decisions adults make today. Resolving family disputes with dignity, respect and a child-centred approach is essential for a child's wellbeing.

I encourage my clients and readers to ensure every decision is guided by one question: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥?

When parents keep that question at the centre of family disputes, children are more likely to feel secure, maintain healthy relationships and adjust more successfully to the changes in their family.

A child-centred approach doesn't remove the challenges of separation but it helps protect children from carrying the emotional burden of adult conflict.

I'm honoured to have been featured by Joburg Times and grateful to Simon Manda for taking the time to share my story so thoughtfully.

Reflecting on 36 years in the legal profession and 31 years since opening my own practice has reminded me that the true privilege of this career has always been the people. Every client, colleague and member of my team has shaped this journey in ways I will always value.
