Wills vs Trusts — or wills AND trusts?
Estate planning isn't reserved for the wealthy. It's one of the most important things any of us can do for the people we love.
In a recent IOL article, Sharon Hamman (Senior Legal Advisor at Momentum) puts it plainly: a Will and a trust serve different purposes, and for many families the strongest protection comes from using them together.
📜 Your Will nominates guardians for minor children, appoints an executor, and directs how your assets are distributed — but only takes effect on death and becomes a public document once lodged with the Master's Office.
🛡️ A trust is a private arrangement that can operate during your lifetime and beyond. It shields assets from beneficiaries' personal creditors, allows seamless succession between generations, and helps protect against estate administration costs and death-related taxes.
A testamentary trust (created in your Will) is especially valuable where minor children are involved — but the timing gap between death and the trust being set up is exactly why a properly considered estate plan matters.
