The Government Gazette published in 2024 introduced a new Points System for the General Work Visa.
Here’s what you need to know:
To qualify, you need to score 100 points.
This visa is valid for 5 years, but it is linked to a specific employer.
Keep in mind, if you change employers, you will need to start the process again and submit a new General Work Visa application.
You may be able to apply from within South Africa if:
🟣 You completed your studies in South Africa and your study visa is still valid.
🟣 Your spouse is in South Africa on a Work Visa and you hold an Accompanying Spouse Visa.
Also remember:
🟣 If your qualifications were obtained outside South Africa, they must be evaluated by SAQA.
After holding a General Work Visa for 5 years, and if your job offer is permanent, you may qualify to apply for Permanent Residence.
If you are extending your visa, make sure you apply at least 60 days before it expires at the relevant VFS office. The requirements are the same as your first application, with one extra document, a work reference letter from your employer.
As always, every case is unique and applications remain subject to DHA discretion.
