The Black Lawyers Association (BLA) is a voluntary association of lawyers in South Africa. Its establishment was sparked by the obstacles that black lawyers were faced with daily in the legal field during the brutal system of apartheid. It was in the midst of their qualifications being doubted, sitting arrangements in court being reserved according to the colour of one’s skin as well as continuous

prevention from practicing law in the Central Business District (CBD) of the so called white towns as a result of the infamous legislations that included amongst others, the Group Areas Act 35 of 1966, that black lawyers organized themselves to realize a truly inclusive, non-racial and progressive society (transformational project).
