Signing something on the spot often comes with an assumption: there's always a few days to change your mind. In reality, the cooling-off period under the Consumer Protection Act typically applies to specific transactions, like door-to-door sales or telesales, not everyday contracts signed in person. A gym membership, a service agreement, most standard purchases: none of these usually come with an automatic right to cancel afterwards. Worth reading the cancellation terms before signing, not after.

Save this for when a friend or sibling mentions their parent needs help managing things. This is when a general power of attorney quietly stops working, and it’s usually right when the family needs it most.

An illness or injury doesn’t just complicate things. It ends the power of attorney entirely. The moment a person loses the ability to make their own decisions, the authority they signed away disappears with it, and whoever was managing things on their behalf is suddenly managing nothing.

What replaces it is a curatorship application through the courts. Separate process, its own timeline, its own cost, starting from scratch at the exact moment a family can least afford delays.

The fix isn’t complicated. It just has to happen while there’s still capacity to plan for what comes after. Worth a proper conversation with someone who can walk you through the options.

Defamation doesn’t need a courtroom to start. A screenshot and a send button can be enough.

Under South African law, a post, comment, or group chat message can all qualify as publication. Intent isn’t the test: what matters is whether a statement was false, published, and damaged someone’s reputation in the eyes of a reasonable person. Deleting it after doesn’t undo it either, screenshots and recovered posts can still surface as evidence.

None of this is a reason to stay silent online. It’s a reason to pause before posting in anger. That pause costs nothing. The legal process that can follow doesn’t.

Unsure whether something crosses the line? Worth a proper conversation, not a guess.
