UNMARRIED FATHERS – YOU HAVE RIGHTS!
Unmarried fathers now have more effective ways to obtain, challenge and enforce the rights they have in respect of their children. If the unmarried father meets certain requirement as set out in the Children’s Act, he acquires the same parental responsibilities and rights as the child’s mother.
Parental responsibilities and rights that a father has include to care for the child, to maintain contact with the child, to act as guardian of the child and to contribute to the maintenance of the child. Mothering is not only a component of a woman’s being but is also part of a man’s being and that a father can also have the capacity and capability to care over a child as well as a mother.
