I I was in beautiful Ottawa to carry out a stakeholder meeting with the Law Society of Nunavut on family violence. So much good work was done and connections forged to move this initiative forward. Thank you to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada for so kindly hosting us!! ❄️

I also made sure to enjoy the city, including Byward Market, Winterlude, the Museum of History, and great food. ❄️

I’m honoured to share that I’ve been featured in the University of Victoria Alumni Magazine in a story titled Road Lawyer.

The article explores my unconventional path into the legal profession — from growing up on an apple orchard in the Okanagan, to riding freight trains across North America after high school, to becoming a single parent balancing work and school while studying at UVic Law.

As a lawyer, I’ve had the privilege of:

* Helping lead the reforms that created the BC Family Law Act

* Contributing to changes later reflected in the federal Divorce Act

* Building a practice in family law, fertility law, mediation, and legal reform in BC and Nunavut

*
Working remotely (sometimes from my rolling office — a beloved van named Vanna White)

For me, this work is about more than legal systems — it’s about supporting modern families in all their diversity with dignity, clarity, and compassion.

Thank you UVic for sharing the story — and thank you to the colleagues, mentors, clients, and communities who continue to shape this journey.

A few years ago, I restructured my law practice so I could focus on what I love most — working closely with my clients — while also living life to the fullest.
Here’s a glimpse into my latest work–play adventure: an My EPIC BC–Yukon Road Trip.

Over several weeks, I zigzagged across British Columbia (more than once!), journeyed up the Alaska Highway to Liard Hot Springs and the Yukon, then back down the Cassiar to Stewart, across to Hyder, Alaska, and on to the stunning Salmon Glacier. From there, I travelled through the Nass Valley — site of Canada’s most recent volcanic eruption in the 1700s — to Prince Rupert, and finally sailed down the Inside Passage back to Vancouver Island.
🌿 7 hot springs
🌌 Northern Lights on 5 magical nights
🚐 4,500 km in my trusty Delica van, Vanna White
🐻 Encounters with wild horses, bears, caribou, a lynx, porcupines, beavers, and countless birds
🍁 Endless fall colours

It was easily my most scenic road trip yet — and along the way, I still made sure my clients’ legal needs were met. That’s the beauty of a practice built with flexibility, trust, and connection at its core.

Happy Victoria Pride!! 🌈Walked as part of the Canadian Bar Association in the Pride Parade, and enjoyed a day of festivities for the Pride Festival in Victoria BC. What a spectacular day. So grateful for where I live and that Canada protects and respects diversity. 🌈

Today, on Indigenous Peoples Day, I celebrate the strength, knowledge, and presence of Inuit, First Nations, and Métis Peoples. I am honoured to work (and play) in Nunavut and the NWT. Grateful for the teachings, relationships, and moments of connection in these incredible communities.
