You may have seen some alarming posts about police activity in Ho Chi Minh City lately. Here's the measured version.
HCMC Police are running a 45-day citywide campaign (May 15 – June 30) focused on drugs and organized crime, part of the city's long-term drug-free-by-2030 plan. For the vast majority of foreigners living here responsibly, daily life carries on completely as normal.
A few practical things worth knowing:
– Traffic stops may now include drug testing for drivers, alongside the usual alcohol checks. Keep your license, registration, and ID on you, good practice any time of year.
– Vapes and heated to***co are illegal to use or carry, with fines and on-the-spot confiscation. If you have a device, leave it at home.
– Vietnam's drug laws are strict, with no exceptions for foreigners. Steering clear is all that's needed.
One note on the rumors: some posts claim door-to-door checks in expat buildings. We've found no official source for this, so please don't let it worry you. We'll only ever share information we can verify.
