Triune C - Counseling, Consulting and Coaching 1) Be Prepared because Life is Difficult
2) Difficulties are Opportunities

Whether as a therapist, pastor, or coach, or as a or as a servant, leader, or mentor, or as a husband, father, or friend, if there is one thing that life has taught me, it is that life is difficult. The front row seat I’ve been given over nearly thirty years in the helping professions has taught me that:

1) Life is Difficult
2) Difficulties are Opportunities
3) Opportunities Lost Breeds Relapse

Whether helping an individual embrace hope, a family and marriage reconcile, a pastor and congregation revitalize, or a manager and team prosper, the adventure has been challenging, fascinating and fruitful. When I served families and youth who’ve been through nightmares that cause our heads to hang in disbelief, I learned how imperative it is to have hope, perseverance, and unconditional, nonjudgmental love. When I was in the midst of intellectual giants at Princeton Theological Seminary, I learned the difference between the Greek concept of education, which is growing in knowledge, and the Hebrew concept, which is growing in application of knowledge. When I served several churches, all of which had marked success despite trends to the contrary and the fact that they move excruciatingly slow, I learned that courage, integrity and character are vital leadership. When I served the Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation I spent more time on the top floors of downtowns tallest buildings than in my office. It became clear that those who’ve achieved the kind success dreams are made of were not immune to the loneliness, emotional pain, and despair of humankinds darkest hours. All of this (My graduate or professional and life education) has gifted me with the ability to have compassion on the deepest most intimate levels for understand, to engage, the common thread of our lives. Whether it’s our dreams or nightmares, our goals or apathies, our successes or breakdowns, this we know, the sooner we release the bad, the sooner we can build on the good, the sooner we can replicate it and spread it to others, and the sooner we remove the bandages from our wounds, the sooner we can get back in the game and smile that contagious smile again and again, and again. Understanding where cruelty comes from can soften our hearts without requiring us to accept harmful behavior. 💛
In a world that pushes us toward extremes, Jesus showed us a better way: joining grace and truth together (John 1:14). We don't have to sacrifice truth to show grace, and we don't have to abandon grace to stand in truth. We can seek both.

Understanding where cruelty comes from can soften our hearts without requiring us to accept harmful behavior.

Jesus joined grace and truth together (John 1:14), and we can seek both. Reflect more deeply with the free weekly devotional linked in our bio.

Is a “tsunami of church closings” actually coming to America? 🌊📉
A recent CNN headline claims we’re on the brink of massive collapse, but when you look at the actual data, the real story is much different.
Here is what the numbers actually show:
❌ It’s NOT a collapse of 10,000 churches a year.
According to Lifeway Research:
• ~3,800 new Protestant churches opened/started
• ~4,000 Protestant churches closed
• Net change: –200 churches
That isn't a tsunami—it’s slow decline and churn. Old churches are closing, but new (and often more diverse) churches are opening.
❌ Buildings changing hands ≠ Congregations disappearing.
The widely quoted "100,000 churches closing" figure conflates property sales with congregational closures. Many growing ethnic, immigrant, and church-planting congregations don't own buildings—they meet in schools, storefronts, and theaters.
❌ The attendance data was misread.
The article claims in-person attendance rose for the first time in 25 years. But the Hartford study actually shows an increase in median attendance per church, driven mostly by internal reshuffling, not an overall surge in American churchgoers.
The Bottom Line:
Sensational headlines get clicks, but nuance tells the truth. The American church landscape is shifting, transitioning, and declining in places—but it is not collapsing.
Facts are our friends, folks. 📊

Happy National Good Neighbor Day!

Being a good neighbor is about so much more than those who live next door. It’s about meeting the people around us with the same kindness, empathy, and care we hope to receive ourselves.

When we extend that care beyond our immediate circles, we create stronger, more connected communities. That same belief is at the heart of Educators’ Neighborhood, where educators come together to learn from one another and strengthen the communities they serve.

There’s no "quick fix" for big feelings. 🤍
Often, there isn’t a magical trick that instantly stops emotional overload. In those challenging moments, what we need is co-regulation. They need us to lend them our calm so they can learn to find their own.
Which means the work starts with us: regulated people regulate people (adults and children). 🥹🫶🏼
It’s easier said than done, but every calm moment counts.
Drop a ❤️ if you needed this reminder today!
P.S. Completely off-topic, but is anyone else LOVING the new Ted Lasso episodes right now? 🤩🥰 It’s the late-night comfort watch I didn't know I needed! ⚽️✨

Notice the word choice: our daily bread. Not mine, but ours—everybody’s.

In The Rock That Is Higher, Madeleine L'Engle reminds us that our duty to care for those in need is woven directly into how we pray and live. As long as any part of the human community goes without, we all carry that weight.

How are you serving your community this week? Let us know below. 👇

“Give us this day our daily bread.” Not mine, but ours – everybody’s. Our responsibility to the starving world is implicit in that sentence. As long as any part of the body is hungry, the entire body knows starvation.

For me, one of the hardest lessons of this season has been learning that not every problem is solved by rowing harder.

My whole life, when things got difficult, I pushed through. Worked longer. Tried harder. Carried more. But Myasthenia Gravis—and life itself—has been teaching me a different wisdom:

Sometimes the problem isn’t your effort. It’s what your effort is attached to.

🚤 Look at the boat.

The rower is working hard. Sweat, determination, persistence. From the shore, it looks like progress.

But the boat is still anchored.

How often do we do the same thing?

We keep trying to save relationships that have already changed.
We keep proving ourselves to people who have already made up their minds.
We keep carrying guilt, resentment, fear, or identities that no longer fit who we are becoming.
We keep rowing because we’ve invested so much that stopping feels like failure.

But sometimes stopping isn’t failure.

Sometimes it’s wisdom.

Sometimes it’s courage.

Sometimes it’s the Spirit whispering, “You don’t need more effort. You need less weight.”

I’ve been discovering that there is a profound difference between effort and progress. One can leave you exhausted. The other can set you free.

So today I’m sitting with a different question:

What anchor am I still holding onto that is preventing God’s current from carrying me into the next chapter of my life?

Maybe the bravest thing isn’t rowing harder.

Maybe it’s lifting the anchor.

There are many companions on the journey of healing. For me, one consistent companion has been Insight Timer.

Recently, I noticed a beautiful thread woven through several wisdom traditions:

✨ Christianity reminds us that when restoration comes, “our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy.”

✨ Confucius points to a joy that remains even in simplicity and hardship.

✨ The Bhagavad Gita teaches that peace emerges when we stop chasing and learn to rest in the present moment.

✨ Sikh wisdom reminds us that true balance can hold both laughter and tears, silence and speech.

Across traditions, laughter is more than amusement. It is a sign of alignment. A moment when we stop striving, release our masks, and simply receive the gift of being alive.

In a world that often rewards anxiety, urgency, and endless productivity, perhaps laughter is a quiet act of resistance. Perhaps joy is not something we achieve, but something we uncover when we become fully present to this moment.

Today, may you find at least one reason to smile, laugh, and remember that your soul was never meant to carry the whole world alone.

🙏 What has brought unexpected joy or laughter into your life lately?
