Today on ‘Build Better Bonds’: The Dillon Lake Visitor Center.

Tucked away in the federal portion of Dillon Lake, there is a small visitor center. This center is not as large as most of the recent ones in our state parks, but it had a fair number of hidden surprises for the boys. The boys not only learned about the local wildlife they see daily, but they also learned about the history of the flood control battles in Zanesville, how fish stock are managed, and water safety (according to Mrs. Attorney RMB, they detailed my rules about life jackets back to the Rangers).

In addition to the educational lesson, the park offers swimming, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping. There is a nice playground (we’ve been to several parties there) as well as a fitness-style hiking trail. Plus, the Rangers gave the boys tons of swag. If you’re looking for a little education during one of your “let’s get out of this house” days this summer, check it out, then go on the trails to get that energy… reduced…

*Welcome to the latest issue of Build Better Bonds. As a family law attorney, I often get asked by clients about fun activities I mention doing with my children. My estate planning clients tend to ask for “ appropriate activities”. I thought, why not share that with everybody at once? The goal is not to discuss law, but to explore ways to enjoy life with your family, find ways to forge new connections, and generally to do things together. This series will be posted semi-regularly, and there will be “repeats” of subjects.*

Text message with your affair partner? I’ll have it, and ask them about it too.

Post on Reddit about your secret purchases? I’ll read it, get my fees, and get my client extra in damages.

Talking to Chat GPT about hiding assets? I’ll enjoy popcorn as I read along.

You think you can hide, but you simply can’t. Learn more about how we use discovery to pierce through the lies and bs in my Family Law 101 series.

Today on ‘Family Law 101: Episode 17 - Written Discovery: The Search for Hidden Assets’, we discuss:

* How we go for the jugular in targeted discovery

* What Interrogatories are (with examples)

* What Admissions are (with examples)

* My actual tactics and approach to both

We have finally reached the point where all of our planning, discussions, and evaluations start to reveal their reward - it is time to get aggressive about our stance. With discovery, I am able to start piercing their ‘shield of lies’, allowing us to finally prove what we need. Written discovery will focus on narrowing the targets, letting us pick off each, one-by-one. Today’s video details exactly how we do that.

Join us next time to discuss oral discovery (Depositions) and how we deal with the production of documents (Subpoenas, Electronically Stored Information [E-Discovery]). After that, we will explore discovery disputes (when they continue hiding/lying) and how we determine the next steps. While these videos are geared towards a family-law focus, the information contained is applicable in all fields of law.

When somebody just doesn’t want to tell the truth, it’s time for discovery!

Today on ‘Family Law 101: Episode 16’ we discuss ‘What the Heck is Discovery?’ (part one of discovery):

* What is discovery, who it targets, and what it covers

* How we use discovery aggressively and defensively

* The concerns that arise from discovery

* My general discovery plan

Our next few videos will cover all aspects of discovery, from written discovery (Interrogatories and Requests for Admissions) to oral discovery (Depositions), and how we deal with the production of documents (Subpoenas, Electronically Stored Information [E-Discovery]) to the fights and disputes when they aren’t produced. While these videos are geared towards a family-law focus, the information contained is applicable in all fields of law.

Today on ‘Build Better Bonds’: The Laurel Caverns

Located in Fayette County, PA, are a fun roadside stop during a weekend getaway. This is a calcareous sandstone cave system (this means there aren’t any of the normal features you’d expect). Built as a clear 70s style roadside attraction, the caves continue to operate for a low-cost, hour or so (more if you include hiking at the state park), option to enjoy on the weekend or when driving through.

Generally, we love this sort of side attraction. Small, local, usually well priced, and a 50/50 of cool or cringe. Laurel Caverns had a lot of the traditional roadside gimmicks, and the lighting threw me off at first, but the overall experience, especially once we got use to the lighting, was awesome. When you are traveling with the family, stop to enjoy the fun along the road.

The Laurel Caverns are located in Farmington, PA, a short 2-3 hour drive from Zanesville or Coshocton. There are numerous small stop locations near the caves.

“I know that I know nothing“ - Socrates
“But I know where to find out” - Robert

We like to pretend that we know everything as lawyers. We don’t. What we do know is how to find the facts that matter, the law that covers, and apply one to the other.

Sometimes it isn’t just legal though. Businesses need cleaners, heirs need accountants, agritourism jousting needs insurance (all real examples). Sometimes my job is to match a different professional with my client, and yes, I usually have a “gal for that”.

Today on ‘Family Law 101: Episode 15’ we discuss:

* The informal gathering of information for both a financial as well as custodial dispute

* How to create a gameplan to navigate to your goals based on the other side’s information

* That equitable exchanges are not always actually equal (and how to determine if that matters)

* How to determine if we seek a fight or negotiation

Our next video will cover discovery itself, then we will move into the penalties for hiding assets, and we will finish up Phase Two’s substantive portion with a focus on transmogrification (aka transmutation) - converting separate property to marital.

Today on ‘Build Better Bonds’:

My wife and I have four boys. The three old enough for sports partake. One does three, two do two, and the fourth just runs along the outside “playing” too. As my clients know, scheduling all of these activities is tough, but well worth it.

I credit my coaches and teams for a lot of my current success. Coach Neeley, he is my approach to difficult problems. ‘Coach’ Politz, he’s my “keep on hiking, the summit will catch up to you” approach. The same is true of my boys, what they learn out there, on good days and the bad, will stay with them. Their ability to work as a team, while thriving as an individual, will only serve to better their future.

Sports are hard to handle, it is a ton of work on the parents. But if your kids want to play, I suggest you find a way.

Pictured: Three of my boys in their track shirts, proudly sponsored by daddy. The fourth thinking he’s part of the team!
