“The reason Americans don’t trust politicians is because they lie. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is a case in point. The Attorney General from his own party tells us he underreported nursing home deaths by 50%. This wasn’t an accounting error, an administrative error, it was a cover up… plain and simple…by an egotistical, uncaring, cold hearted, political bully."

THE owners of a much-loved Gullane hotel have checked out their last guest after decades of dedicated service.

The Mallard, on the village’s East Links Road, has been owned and managed by husband-and-wife Susan and Cameron Law since 1987.

It was previously owned by Susan’s parents, Iain and Flora Clark, who took the business over in 1963, after running a restaurant in Pitlochry.

Iain chose the hotel’s name after being inspired by the wildlife in Aberlady Bay.

Sadly, he died four years later but Flora, Susan and the rest of the family worked together to keep the business going.

When Flora died in 1987, Susan and Cameron took over The Mallard.

Marta Lempart, a member of Women's Strike, an organization organizing the protests, called for everyone to go into the streets. She added that the publication of the ruling was a "crime".

The law, which only allows abortion in cases of r**e, in**st and when the mother's life is in danger, was approved by the Polish Constitutional Court in October, sparking nationwide protests. The law states that abortions in the case of fetal abnormalities are "incompatible" with Poland's constitution.

The government has consistently supported the court's verdict, saying that it would halt what it called "eugenic abortions," referring to the termination of fetuses with Down's Syndrome.

Though opponents have accused the Catholic and conservative ruling Law and Justice Party (P*S) of exerting influence over the court in its approval, party leaders say this is not the case. Poland, a staunchly Catholic country, already had some of the strictest abortion laws in the European Union before approval of the newly tightened measures.

Fewer than 2,000 legal abortions are performed in Poland each year, with many doctors refusing to perform the operation because of religious convictions. Women's groups estimate that as many as 200,000 more Polish women seek abortions each year, either abroad or illegally at home.

Register tax advice work now or face SRA enforcement, law firms warned
Solicitor firms could face enforcement by the profession’s regulator if they do not register their tax advice work under new anti-money-laundering (AML) obligations, the Law Society of England and Wales has cautioned.

Earlier this month, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) stated that solicitors had until 10 January to check if any tax advice work they provide falls under a new and wider definition for AML purposes.

The amended regulations follow the introduction of the fifth anti-money laundering (AML) directive, which came into force last year. It included a widened definition of tax adviser, which now includes more activities than before.

Law Society president David Greene said:

“Any firm that finds it is now in the scope of the regulations should have applied to the SRA or another AML supervisor, such as HM Revenue & Customs, to be supervised for money laundering before 10 January. If they have not done so they can still apply now.

“Solicitors who may fall within the scope of the new obligations include those working in litigation, employment, estate planning, wealth management, corporate and family law, while those working in mergers and acquisitions and conveyancing are already included in the requirements.

“If you are unsure whether you fall within these new regulations or if a firm believes they do not need to be regulated for money-laundering purposes, we urge you read the guidance for peace of mind.”
