Did you know there’s an entire town beneath Alder Lake?
Before Alder Lake became the beautiful recreation destination we know today, it was home to the little town of Alder, Washington.
Nestled in the Nisqually River Valley with Mount Rainier towering in the background, Old Alder was once a bustling little community with homes, businesses, a railroad depot, and families who called the valley home.
In the 1940s, the construction of Alder Dam changed everything. The original town was cleared to make way for the reservoir, and its former location was eventually submerged beneath the rising waters. Residents relocated, and a new Alder community developed nearby.
This incredible historic photograph shows the original town with the future flood line drawn right across the landscape. Imagine standing there, knowing that the place you called home would soon be underwater.
Today, thousands of people visit Alder Lake to boat, fish, camp, and enjoy the scenery, often without realizing the history resting beneath the water.
A little piece of Western Washington history, hiding in plain sight.

What a fun day! Mysterious holes on a showing, then to the Deschutes River, then to Lakewood for photos, downpour of rain, and fajitas. ❤️ My kids are going to have interesting reports if their teachers ask what their mom does or what we did over summer break. 😂❤️🏡
