Our firm has now filed and won nearly six dozen Habeas Corpus petitions in Federal Court 💪. That is nearly six dozen times a Federal Judge has determined that the government unlawfully detained someone in ICE custody.

Each case represents a human being.
A family.
A life placed on hold.

And the work continues.

We currently have a pending Habeas Class Action in the Western District of Michigan, challenging unlawful detention practices and fighting to ensure that due process is more than just words on paper.

The Constitution does not stop at the detention center door. And we will continue to fight in federal court holding the government accountable.

Proud to share that Avanti Law Group, PLLC is partnering with Grand Valley State University and the GVSU Student Senate to provide free legal consultations for students facing landlord–tenant issues this year.

For many students, signing that first lease is a defining “welcome to adulthood” moment. They shouldn’t have to learn their rights through stress, conflict, or costly mistakes — they deserve knowledge, protection, and guidance from the start.

This collaboration represents more than legal help in the present. It’s the foundation for something bigger. We’re excited to grow this work into meaningful internships, mentorship opportunities, and real pathways into the legal profession for students who may one day stand where we stand.

For the Avanti family, this project is deeply personal. Avanti Cares began as an idea sparked by Tatiana Alvarez and truly came to life through the dedication of Tatiana and Laura Salas as a summer project. Today, seeing Tati step into leadership as Project Director is a moment of immense pride. Watching the next generation lead with purpose is exactly why we do this work.

The DHS/ICE funding bill goes before the Senate this Friday and requires 7 Democratic votes to pass.

Rather than a standalone vote, ICE funding was bundled with critical funding for education, health, labor, housing, defense, and transportation, forcing senators into a single up-or-down vote.

ICE already receives $18.75 billion this year. An additional $10 billion would expand detention and family separation — including impacts on law-abiding U.S. citizens.

🚨 Important Update for Immigrants and Employers 🚨 (Anuncio en Español mas abajo)

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has just announced a major change that could affect thousands of immigrants who work legally in the U.S.

Starting October 30, 2025, most immigrants who apply to renew their Employment Authorization Document (EAD) will no longer receive an automatic extension while their renewal is being processed.

✅ What this means:

Until now, many immigrants could keep working legally while waiting for their renewal to be approved.

Under this new rule, that automatic protection will end for most categories.

Only a few very limited exceptions will remain.

⚠️ Why this matters:
Without automatic extensions, many people could lose their jobs simply because of processing delays at USCIS. Delays that can take months. This change adds yet another barrier for immigrants who are already following the law and contributing to our communities.

As immigration attorneys we believe this move will make life harder for law-abiding immigrants and create unnecessary hardships for families and employers alike.

If you or someone you know relies on an EAD, start planning early for renewals and stay informed about your options.

📞 Need guidance? Contact my office at 616-257-6807 to discuss how this change may affect you.

The FBI provides the following six tips on how people can protect themselves from sextortion schemes:

1. Be selective about what you share online. If your social media accounts are open to everyone, a predator may be able to figure out a lot of information about you.

2. Be wary of anyone you encounter for the first time online. Block or ignore messages from strangers.

3. Be aware that people can pretend to be anything or anyone online. Videos and photos are not proof that people are who they claim to be. Images can be altered or stolen. In some cases, predators have even taken over the social media accounts of their victims.

4. Be suspicious if you meet someone on one game or app and this person asks you to start talking on a different platform.

5. Be in the know. Any content you create online—whether it is a text message, photo, or video—can be made public. And nothing actually “disappears” online. Once you send something, you don’t have any control over where it goes next.

6. Be willing to ask for help. If you are getting messages or requests online that don’t seem right, block the sender, report the behavior to the site administrator, talk to someone or talk to an adult.

If you have been victimized online, tell someone.

If you have information about or believe you are a victim of sextortion, contact your local FBI field office, call 1-800-CALL-FBI, or report it online at http://tips.fbi.gov. More information is available at https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/safety-resources/scams-and-safety/common-scams-and-crimes/sextortion.
