I’ll give credit where it’s due — even small steps toward reinvesting in underserved communities matter. But Atlanta residents have been sounding the alarm about food deserts for years. Access to healthy, affordable food shouldn’t take this long to become a priority. Hopefully this is the beginning of real, lasting change and not just another talking point.

This is why community involvement matters. People are tired of only seeing money poured into reacting to problems instead of preventing them in the first place. Safe communities are built through investment in people, housing, mental health, transportation, parks, and intervention programs — not just policing after the damage is already done.
Shout out to everyone who showed up and spoke out despite the weather. Atlanta is growing rapidly, and residents deserve transparency on where funding is going and whether it truly reflects the needs of the people living here every day.

Atlanta keeps calling $1,600 rent “affordable” while working people are choosing between housing, groceries, gas, and childcare. We need to stop pretending those numbers reflect the reality of the average resident.

Recent City Council discussion around extending Atlanta’s TADs another 30 years raised a bigger question for me:

Who are these developments actually affordable for?

Because if someone making $15–$20 an hour can’t comfortably afford the rent being labeled as “affordable housing,” then we’re not closing the wealth gap — we’re just rebranding market-rate housing with political language.

I’m in real estate, so I understand development matters. Growth matters. Investment matters. But transparency matters too.

Atlanta residents deserve honest conversations about what these tax-funded incentives are truly producing. Not vague promises. Not inflated AMI calculations. And definitely not policies that sound good in presentations but fail the very people they claim to help.

The uncomfortable truth is this:
You cannot solve displacement with housing prices that still displace people.

At some point, Atlanta has to decide whether “affordable housing” is about optics for developers or actual accessibility for the people who already live here.
