Ubers compromised data attack from the October 2016 included names, email addresses and phone numbers of 50 million Uber riders around the world. The personal information of about 7 million drivers was accessed as well, including some 600,000 U.S. driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, credit card information, trip location details, or other data.

Uber Technologies Inc. was sued for negligence hours after it disclosed that customers and drivers’ personal data was hacked over a year ago.

In its race to embrace driverless vehicles, Washington has cleared away regulatory hurdles for auto companies and brushed aside consumer warnings about the risk of crashes and hacking.

But at a recent hearing, lawmakers absorbed an economic argument that illustrated how the driverless revolution they are encouraging could backfire politically, particularly in Trump country.
