Relationships are the single most important thing to you and your life. Our Sho-Kal Law partners’ friendship not only shaped their law school experience, but it forever shaped their future careers and personal lives.

But they did not start out as a duo, they actually started out as a trio - on their first day of law school orientation at Southwestern Law School, Laleh and Eden met in the bathroom. They recognized each other from a brief interaction they had two years prior with some mutual friends, and from that moment on they stuck together.

The next day, as they were chatting outside in the sun, another student interrupted their conversation. It was Sogand β€œStacey” Bavafa (typical). After they excused her for interrupting their talk, the three literally became inseparable! πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈ

For the next three years, Laleh, Sogand and Eden did 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘡𝘩π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨 together, both inside and outside of school. They carpooled to school, studied long hours in the library, fooled around during finals week, and formed a short-lived, but a very memorable tradition of having matching law-related costumes for their law school Halloween parties (see attached).

We love you, Sogi, and we couldn’t have done this without you πŸ’˜

For the last 50 years, the month of June has been associated with LGBTQ+ Pride events throughout the United States and the rest of the world. In 1999, President Bill Clinton officially declared June as β€œGay & Le***an Pride Month.” The month of June was then later declared by President Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and even Donald Trump.

Despite such national and international recognition, today, many if not most individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ experience some sort of workplace discrimination, harassment, or both.

As of September 2020, 8 million workers in the United States identified as LGBTQ+. Nonetheless, employment discrimination against LGBTQ+ workers is, and continues to be, widespread and persistent. In fact, 45.5% of LGBTQ+ workers reported experiencing unfair work treatment and/or harassment because of their s*xual orientation or gender identity at some point in their lives, and 31.1% reported experiencing such discrimination and/or harassment within the past 5 years.

Sexual orientation and/or gender identity discrimination in the workplace should not be tolerated. Fortunately, both California and Federal law explicitly prohibit workplace discrimination based on one’s s*xual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression. Specifically, employers are prohibited from firing, demoting, refusing to hire, refusing to promote, harassing or otherwise discriminating against any employee because of his/her/their s*xual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression.

While these laws exist to protect LGBTQ+ employees, often times employees are either unaware of the protections afforded to them by law or are incapable of fighting alone. That’s what we’re here for. If you know anyone who is being discriminated because of his/her/their s*xual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression, let them know they are not alone.

The consultation is FREE. Call now (888) 507-5991.

Tip of the day πŸ’‘

One of the hardest things for clients to do is provide a detailed and accurate description of how they felt, and the symptoms they experienced, immediately after they were injured or harmed. One explanation for that is that we usually want to forget painful and uncomfortable experiences.

However, the value of any case, depends in big part on a victim’s pain and suffering and emotional distress. One way that has proven effective in helping our clients vividly recall how they felt following their injury/harm is writing a journal. It’s easy, free, and can increase the value of your case significantly.

When in doubt, write it out. πŸ“

Noroozetoon Mobarak - Happy Persian New Year!🌷

The Persian New Year, celebrated by Iranians all over the world, marks the beginning of spring and the end of winter. Nowruz literally translates to β€œNew Day” and has been celebrated for over three thousand years. In ancient times, the arrival of spring was viewed as a triumph over the darkness of winter. Today, the arrival of spring is viewed as a new beginning, spent celebrating with gatherings of family and friends.

During this time, Iranians embrace many traditions including the Haft-Sin which is comprised of seven symbolic objects all of which begin with the letter β€œS”. The best part of these traditions, however, are the 13 days of holidays which accompany the dawning of the New Year. May everyone who is celebrating have a blessed and beautiful New Year. Nowruz Peeruz! πŸ’›

Happy Purim! 🐯🐰

The Jewish people celebrate Purim to commemorate the saving of the Jewish people living in the Persian Empire who were subject to killing by a Persian official. Fortunately, the story had a happy ending as the Jewish people were saved by Mordecai, Esther, and the Persian King himself, Ahasverosh, who made Esther the Queen of Persia. πŸ‘‘

Today, centuries later, our founding partners, a Persian and an Israeli Jew, make it a full circle by not only forming a partnership aimed at changing the lives of others, but by also being real-life best friends. β™Ύ

Purim also falls in the Jewish month of Adar, which is known to be a month of happiness and joy!
