Back in the saddle in Mineola. Going up against Allstate today in a court room where I tried one of my first cases. I was fresh out of law school going up against a well known, seasoned trial lawyer for State Farm. The memories of that trial all came back as I conferenced today's case with the law secretary.
At my trial back in 1990 I represented a teenager from Hempstead who ran into the street to catch a football on Christmas morning and was hit by a car. It was a very tough case to prove fault on the driver. I remember giving my closing argument and then the jury deciding in favor of the driver. As a rookie trial lawyer you are optimistic about every case, and when you lose it stings.
I learned a lot in that trial and the judge helped to make the experience memorable.
To this day, I also remember the gloating smile of the cocky defense attorney. But other attorneys from his firm who watched the trial actually came to me afterwards to tell me that I tried a solid case in light of the difficult liablity.
In my over 35 years of litigating against insurance companies and their lawyers I have always fought hard, but in a fair and friendly manner.
I have never had an "enemy" on the other side, just mutual respect the way it should be.

It has been nine years since Storm went viral for rescuing a drowning fawn. Seeing his gentle care as he brought the baby deer safely to the beach is just as moving today as it was back then.
