Canadian lawyer Charles Vance Millar had one of the wildest wills in history. 😅

When he died, he left part of his fortune to whichever Toronto woman had the most children in the ten years after his death.

Yes… seriously.

The competition became known as “The Great Stork Derby,” and in the end, four women with nine children each split the inheritance. 👶

It’s funny to look back on now, but it’s also a reminder of how much power estate planning documents actually have.

Your will can shape behavior, create conflict, inspire generosity… or apparently start a decade-long competition. 🤣

They are your “backup” plan in case you need someone to make important decisions for you when you aren’t able to (i.e., if you have a stroke).

They are identical except for one BIG detail:

A Power of Attorney is a document meant for LIMITED circumstances and will become ineffective the moment you become disabled.

A Durable Power of Attorney is a document that stays in effect even if something happens to you. It won’t expire until you pass away.

But one of the biggest mistakes people make after that?

Never talking about it again. 😅

The people you’ve chosen, executors, trustees, healthcare agents, actually need to know they’ve been chosen. And it’s better to do it while it’s fresh in your mind rather than later!

They should also know where your documents are and what role they may need to play if something happens.

Because even the best estate plan can create confusion if nobody knows it exists.
