You have a great idea, share the same vision, and trust each other. Sounds like the perfect business partnership, right?

But before jumping in, there are a few important conversations worth having.

Who owns what percentage of the business? How will profits and responsibilities be divided? Who gets the final say when you disagree? And what happens if one of you eventually wants out?

These aren't always easy conversations, especially with a friend, but they're important ones.

Having a written agreement that clearly outlines ownership, responsibilities, and expectations can help avoid misunderstandings down the road.

After all, going into business together should be about building something great, not putting your friendship at risk.

Consider this your sign.

We hate to sound like a broken record, but having a will is one of those things that's easy to put off until it's too late.

And no, you don't have to be retired or wealthy to need one!

Can someone steal your business idea?

The short answer? Not necessarily.

Under U.S. law, an idea alone generally isn't protected by copyright. That means someone can create a similar business without automatically breaking the law.

However, certain parts of your business, like your brand name, logo, original content, or confidential information, may qualify for legal protection.

The takeaway: Having an idea and legally owning the rights to it are two different things.

Are your contracts still working for you? Have there been any changes to ownership or how the business operates? And do you have a plan for what happens down the road?

A quick year-end review can help make sure everything still lines up with where your business is headed.
