Most heating oil tanks have been in the ground between 50 to 80 years. Too long!!! They corrode and develop holes easily because they are thin walled, bare steel, tanks. It’s past time to tank them out!!!

Even aboveground oil tanks need to be handled with care and closed properly (i.e. prevent fume ignition with dry ice, cut open, pumped, washed clean, and removed with a disposal manifest.)

It’s best to deal with them before they leak!

We looked at this tank 10 years ago, but the owners decided not to sell the house and not to invest in removing the tank. Now in 2026: the property is for sale and the buyers forced the tank removal. The property owner remembered us and asked us to remove the tank and bring it into State compliance so that the house could be sold. So, we did!

This underground oil tank was used at a rural residential property until a previous owner switched to an aboveground oil tank. After removing the underground tank, it was clear to see why the switch was made. The holes in the underground oil tank were large and numerous. Nevertheless, we were able to bring the leaking tank into compliance with all State requirements. The State’s “No Further Action” letter will help the owners to sell the house in the future.

Before buying a home built pre-1970, it’s a good idea to have a detailed oil tank search. Even the old historic homes built in the 1800’s and early 1900’s may have been retrofitted with an underground oil tank in the 1940s, 1950s or 1960s. It was more convenient that heating with wood or coal.

Here is another oil tank that was hard to get to without damaging the concrete sidewalks and landscape edging. The tank was also partially under the concrete patio which required very careful removal actions. Despite being immediately beside the oil tank, the fig tree was not harmed during the tank removal. Mission accomplished!

Tank removals in the downtown historic district (Wilmington) have unique challenges, mostly tight spaces and logistics. This tank was leaking through multiple large corrosion holes. Once the tank was brought into compliance (proper removal and paperwork), the State issued a “No Further Action” letter closing the incident.

At the property owners request, we conducted some additional yard grading to prevent water from draining to the garage.
