NEVER, NEVER, EVER Payoff a Traffic Ticket in North Carolina UNLESS...

UNLESS you have spoken with an experienced traffic lawyer who constantly handles these types of cases and are told there is NOTHING that can be done for you.

If you pay the ticket, you will be hit with the MAXIMUM POINTS ALLOWED on your insurance and drivers license.

I have NEVER responded that there was NOTHING I could do in 22 years of practice and suspect that I never will! Why, there are many options to keep you from being hit with points and they should ALL be exhausted BEFORE ever paying a ticket and receiving points.

Nearly two years before he was assassinated, Lincoln was shot at and almost killed

Late one August evening in 1863, after an exhausting day at the White House, Lincoln rode alone by horse to the Soldiers’ Home, his family’s summer residence. A private at the gate heard a shot ring out and, moments later, the horse galloped into the compound, with a bareheaded Lincoln clinging to his steed.

Lincoln explained that a gunshot had gone off at the foot of the hill, sending the horse galloping so fast it knocked his hat off. Two soldiers retrieved Lincoln’s hat, which had a bullet hole right through it. The President asked the guards to keep the incident under wraps: He didn’t want to worry his wife Mary.

Before William Tecumseh Sherman became a great Union general, he was demoted for apparent insanity.

In October 1861, General Sherman, commander of Union forces in Kentucky, told Secretary of War Simon Cameron he needed 60,000 men to defend his territory and 200,000 to go on the offensive. Cameron called Sherman’s request “insane” and removed the general from command.

In a letter to his brother, a devastated Sherman wrote, “I do think I Should have committed su***de were it not for my children. I do not think that I can again be trusted with command.” However, in February 1862, Sherman was reassigned to Paducah, Kentucky, under Ulysses S. Grant, who saw not insanity but competence in the disgraced general.

Later in the war, when a civilian badmouthed Grant, Sherman defended his friend, saying, “General Grant is a great general. He stood by me when I was crazy, and I stood by him when he was drunk; and now, sir, we stand by each other always.”

Protecting Funds for Heroes Injured in the Line of Duty

For several years while serving in the North Carolina Senate, I worked to stop the abuse by individuals seeking compensation reserved for law-enforcement heroes.

Under a previous state law, the Legislature had intended to continue the full salary of any state law-enforcement officer injured in the line of duty while protecting the public. This law was well intended — lawmakers wanted to make sure that law-enforcement heroes didn’t see a salary cut while going through the healing process after a significant injury. However, we discovered that a number of individuals, who were NOT heroes, were seeking compensation under the fund.

Here’s an example: A corrections officer slips in a parking lot and hurts his back. He is out of work for a year and a half while healing. Instead of seeking Worker’s Compensation, like every other employee is required to do, he would receive full salary and benefits under the salary continuation plan for up to two full years.

My new law amended the old legislation. Now, only law-enforcement officers... Follow this link to my blog to read the remainder of this article: http://bit.ly/1CXtbaH?utm_campaign=meetedgar&utm_medium=social&utm_source=meetedgar.com

How does Spousal Support (Alimony) work and how much can I receive?

There is no formula that the court uses to determine the amount of support. In fact, there are many variables that can influence the amount and duration of alimony.

The court first determines who is a “supporting” party and who is a “dependent” party. That really means who makes more income than the other party.

Next, the court determines whether there was “fault” to be ascribed to one or the other of the parties (think of this as a balancing test, all else being equal – what tips the scale one way or another?). If a dependent spouse has committed adultery during the intact marriage, alimony is barred. But if the other spouse (the supporting one) also did, it may be granted. If one party was particularly abusive or troubled, this “misconduct” may alter the amount awarded.

The court considers many things when arriving at the amount, including the standard of living during the marriage, the relative educational level and employment options of the parties, the assets, liabilities and debts of the parties, the duration of the marriage and the dependent party’s contributions as a homemaker/caregiver during the marriage.

Before and during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln pushed to send freed slaves abroad.

The policy, called colonization, had been supported by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay—a hero of Lincoln’s—and even Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose protagonists in “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” ultimately emigrate from the United States to Africa.

In August 1862, Lincoln brought five black ministers to the White House and told them that slavery and the war had demonstrated that it would be “better for us both, therefore, to be separated.” He wanted to send freed blacks to Central America, even calling for a constitutional amendment authorizing Congress to pay for colonization.

However, prominent abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison were appalled by the idea. Lincoln never succeeded at gathering support for the policy. After he signed the Emancipation Proclamation, he never mentioned it again in public.

Do NOT Allow IRS Tax Scammer to Rip You Off

The IRS continues to warn consumers to guard against scam phone calls from thieves intent on stealing their money or their identity. Criminals pose as the IRS to trick victims out of their money or personal information. Here are several tips to help you avoid being a victim of these scams:

Scammers make unsolicited calls. Thieves call taxpayers claiming to be IRS officials. They demand that the victim pay a bogus tax bill. They con the victim into sending cash, usually through a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. They may also leave “urgent” callback requests through phone “robo-calls,” or via phishing email.

Callers try to scare their victims. Many phone scams use threats to intimidate and bully a victim into paying. They may even threaten to arrest, deport or revoke the license of their victim if they don’t get the money.

Scams use caller ID spoofing. Scammers often alter caller ID to make it look like the IRS or another agency is calling. The callers use IRS titles and fake badge numbers to appear legitimate. They may use the victim’s name, address and other personal information to make the call sound official.

Cons try new tricks all the time. Some schemes provide an actual IRS address where they tell the victim to mail a receipt for the payment they make. Others use emails that contain a fake IRS document with a phone number or an email address for a reply. These scams often use official IRS letterhead in emails or regular mail that they send to their victims. They try these ploys to make the ruse look official.

Scams cost victims over $23 million. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, or TIGTA, has received reports of about 736,000 scam contacts since October 2013. Nearly 4,550 victims have collectively paid over $23 million as a result of the scam.

The IRS will NOT:

Call you to demand immediate payment. The IRS will not call you if you owe taxes without first sending you a bill in the mail.

Demand that you pay taxes and not allow you to question or appeal the amount you owe.

Require that you pay your taxes a certain way. For instance, require that you pay with a prepaid debit card.

Ask for your credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

Threaten to bring in police or other agencies to arrest you for not paying.

If you don’t owe taxes, or have no reason to think that you do:

Do not give out any information. Hang up immediately.

Contact TIGTA to report the call. Use their “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” webpage. You can also call 800-366-4484.

Report it to the Federal Trade Commission. Use the “FTC Complaint Assistant” on http://bit.ly/2iigbI9. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" in the notes.

If you know you owe, or think you may owe tax:

Call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you.

Phone scams first tried to sting older people, new immigrants to the U.S. and those who speak English as a second language. Now the crooks try to swindle just about anyone. And they’ve ripped-off people in every state in the nation.

Stay alert to scams that use the IRS as a lure. Tax scams can happen any time of year, not just at tax time. For more, visit “Tax Scams and Consumer Alerts” on http://bit.ly/145xdjW.

Each and every taxpayer has a set of fundamental rights they should be aware of when dealing with the IRS. These are your Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Explore your rights and our obligations to protect them on http://bit.ly/145xdjW.

Remember people’s names!

It's important to make people feel appreciated. Everyone loves the sound of their own name!

To remember a name, say their name back to them when they introduce themselves. Then repeat the name in your head a number of times until you are sure you have it.

Continue to use their name in conversation as much as possible to remove any chance of forgetting it. If you’re still having trouble, make up a rhyme about their name: “Stan the Man” or “Natalie flatters me.” It may be goofy, but it works!
