When Attorney Telana Poe was asked if there was a defining moment that confirmed she was meant to practice personal injury law, she shared how a trucking case pushed her to lean on an unexpected source of insight—her father, a truck driver. 🤝

She asked him what most personal injury attorneys would never think to ask: what would a truck driver not want a PI lawyer to know? His answers helped shape how she approached the case and deepened her understanding of the industry from the inside out.

Just four years into practice, she continues to grow, learn, and sharpen her advocacy for every client she represents.

Today, we had the honor of surprising Paige Walker alongside Hickory City Schools staff, Catawba County Emergency Services personnel, and a representative from Horton & Mendez, Attorneys at Law, PLLC, with some exciting news—she has been named the Second Place Winner in the statewide Best of NC Heroes 2026 Contest!

Paige received the second-highest number of votes among more than 800 votes cast across 30 North Carolina counties. The contest, created by Horton & Mendez Cares, recognizes everyday heroes who make a meaningful impact in their communities.

As a CTE teacher at Hickory Career and Arts Magnet High School and a dedicated paramedic with Catawba County EMS, Paige exemplifies what it means to serve others. Her commitment to educating future healthcare professionals while continuing to care for our community through EMS has inspired countless students, colleagues, patients, and community members.

Settlement Alert 🚨

We’re proud to share that Attorney Alan Castro and Paralegal Claudia Orellana secured a $200,000 Workers’ Compensation settlement for our client. 🙌

The case involved a significant fall from approximately 20 feet during the course of employment, resulting in severe injuries and multiple surgeries. This matter involved an employment relationship dispute, an issue we frequently see in construction and other hands-on industries, where workers are too often misclassified or denied coverage after a workplace injury.

This outcome reflects the persistence, skill, and dedication of our Workers’ Compensation team at Horton & Mendez. We’re proud of our team and the result achieved for our client. 🌟

Congratulations to Justus Lacewell, our 1st Place Winner of the Best of NC Heroes 2026 🎉

Justus is a Respiratory Therapist Technician at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. 🩺 He helps care for patients during some of their most difficult moments with care and compassion. Those who work alongside him say you’ll never see him without a smile on his face, which is a reflection of the kindness and encouragement he brings to everything he does. 💙

We’re proud to recognize Justus as this year’s 1st Place Winner! He truly embodies what it means to be a hero, showing up as a bright spot in dark moments and bringing positivity and comfort to those around him. We can’t wait to see all that he will continue to accomplish!
