September is a great reminder to refresh our safety practices and make sure the right measures are in place and being used every day. From showing homes and hosting open houses to meeting new clients, taking a few extra precautions can make a big difference.

Here are a few realtor safety tips every real estate professional should keep in mind:

• Use FOREWARN before meeting a new client. Take advantage of FOREWARN to help verify a prospect’s identity and access available background information before meeting them in person.

• Let someone know where you are. Share your showing schedule, location and expected return time with a colleague, friend or family member.

• Meet new clients in a public place first when possible, especially before showing a property alone.

• Stay aware of your surroundings. Keep your phone accessible, avoid distractions and trust your instincts.

• Know your exits. When entering a property, take note of entrances and exits so you have a clear way out if needed.

• Park for safety. Choose a location that allows you to leave easily and avoid getting blocked in.

• Use the buddy system. Consider bringing a colleague along when meeting an unfamiliar client or showing a vacant property.

• Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it. Leave the situation and get help.

Your safety comes first. Make safety part of every showing, every meeting and every transaction.
