For consumers who care about the environmental impacts of the products they buy, today was a good day. The U.S. Securities Exchange Commission voted 3-to-1 to propose a rule that would require regulated companies to disclose important climate-related information, including information on climate risk, climate-related targets and plans, and certain disaggregated data of a registrant’s direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions. Under the proposal, registrants will be required to disclose scope-1 and scope-2 GHG emissions (direct and indirect emissions from a registrant’s facilities). Some registrants also will be required to disclose data on scope-3 GHG emissions (e.g., upstream and downstream emissions in their value chain) that are material. This is a meaningful step forward in helping investors to make better-informed decisions about where they put their dollars.

Just finished listening to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s meeting on its proposed rule to require registrants to disclose certain climate-related information, including information on climate risk, climate-related targets and plans, and certain disaggregated data of a registrant’s direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions. Under the proposal, registrants will be required to disclose scope-1 and scope-2 GHG emissions (direct and indirect emissions from a registrant’s facilities). Some registrants also will be required to disclose data on scope-3 GHG emissions (e.g., upstream and downstream emissions in their value chain) that are material.

The proposal passed 3-to-1 and will be available on SEC’s website shortly. During the meeting, each Commissioner provided notable insights and identified areas of importance for public comment on the proposal.
