An Illinois woman is suing Target for allegedly violating the state's Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). The lawsuit claims Target collects biometric data, like facial scans, from customers through its surveillance systems without their knowledge or consent. BIPA protects residents from companies collecting such data, including fingerprints, voiceprints, and facial geometry, without informing them or obtaining their permission. The lawsuit argues these surveillance practices violate BIPA as Target doesn't notify customers about data collection or its usage. It further claims Target uses the data not only for shoplifting prevention but captures every customer entering the store. The woman's attorneys point out the existence of former employee accounts online discussing Target's facial recognition system as evidence of its use.

An Illinois woman filed a lawsuit accusing Target of illegally collecting and storing customers' biometric data through facial recognition technology.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that the Justice Department is close to finalizing a settlement of nearly $100 million with victims of s*xual abuse by former sports doctor Larry Nassar. This comes after a report revealed the FBI mishandled initial complaints against Nassar in 2015. The victims had collectively sought over $1 billion from the government for the FBI's inaction. This follows settlements reached with victims against Michigan State University ($500 million) and USA Gymnastics/USOPC ($380 million) in prior years. Nassar is serving up to 175 years in prison for abusing hundreds of athletes, including members of the USA Gymnastics Olympic team.

The Justice Department found that the FBI failed to properly act when the athletes raised concerns about the disgraced sports doctor.

Homeowners in a Florida community are appealing a court decision in a case against an aerospace company. The homeowners claim their property values dropped due to radioactive contamination from the company's mishandling of materials. The Florida Department of Health found that brain and central nervous system tumors had occurred at a statistically significant increased rate among children living in the community. A jury found the company negligent in handling radioactive materials but not liable for the resulting property value decrease. The homeowners argue they shouldn't have had to prove the contamination migrated to their specific properties. They also believe they should have been allowed to certify the case as a class action lawsuit to represent the entire community. The aerospace company argues the jury verdict was correct and that they are not responsible for the property value decline. The appeals court will decide whether a new trial is warranted.

Property owners filed suit after the state health department found outsized cancer rates in the neighborhood of Acreage to be associated with radioactive contamination.

The Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision on Wednesday in favor of broader protections against workplace discrimination. The case involved a St. Louis police officer, Jatonya Muldrow, who claimed she was transferred to a less desirable position due to her gender. Previously, some courts required employees to show significant harm, like a pay cut or demotion, to win a discrimination lawsuit under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. The Supreme Court ruled against this, stating that any harm caused by a discriminatory transfer is sufficient to pursue a lawsuit. This decision clarifies Title VII and empowers employees to challenge discriminatory actions that might not involve losing their job or facing a major pay cut. The justices were divided in their reasoning, but the outcome provides a clearer path for employees facing unfair treatment based on characteristics like s*x, race, or religion.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday made it easier to bring certain workplace discrimination lawsuits in a ruling that gave a boost to a St. Louis police officer who claimed she was transferred to an undesirable new role because of her s*x.

California homeowners facing rising insurance costs might have some relief on the horizon. A new bill, Senate Bill 1060, proposed by Senator Josh Becker would require insurance companies to consider wildfire mitigation efforts by the state and homeowners when determining insurance rates. This includes homeowners creating defensible space around their properties. However, the bill doesn't guarantee a discount. Insurance companies argue they already consider mitigation efforts and that new regulations are coming from the California Department of Insurance. They believe these regulations, which take into account new catastrophe models, are the better approach. Homeowners in the state have been struggling with rising premiums and even widespread policy cancellations due to wildfires.

There’s new hope for California homeowners facing rising insurance costs: Lawmakers are considering a new bill to boost protections.

A new class action lawsuit alleges North Carolina-based healthcare provider Atrium Health shared patients' medical information with Facebook and Google through Facebook's Meta Pixel. The lawsuit claims this allowed targeted advertisements about patients' medical conditions to appear on social media. The plaintiffs allege they received spam and Facebook ads related to their health concerns after using Atrium's website. The lawsuit argues that Meta Pixel intercepted private information in violation of federal law. Atrium denies sharing any protected health information and says patients use secure portals to communicate with caregivers. The lawsuit provides screenshots showing Pixel tracked searches for specific medical services and treatments. Atrium says it uses similar technology to connect patients with more information but doesn't share data for targeted advertising.

Two patients allege that after sharing information with Atrium Health, they received spam mail and targeted Facebook ads.
