Last week, the DuPage County Bar Association had the privilege of celebrating individuals whose dedication to pro bono service continues to make a meaningful difference in our community!

Pro bono work is about more than providing legal assistance. It’s about opening doors, removing barriers and ensuring that individuals and families have access to the guidance and representation they need.

Our award recipients, John Kelly, Melissa Piwowar, and MKFM, exemplify the very best of the legal profession through their generosity, compassion and unwavering commitment to serving others. Their willingness to dedicate their time, knowledge and talents reminds us of the powerful impact attorneys can have beyond the courtroom.

Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees! Thank you for your dedication to public service, your commitment to access to justice and for inspiring others in our legal community to give back.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us in recognizing these outstanding individuals and celebrating the importance of pro bono service in DuPage County.

Behind every successful attorney is often a network of people who help make it possible.

From the colleague who steps in when your schedule gets overwhelming to the mentor who offers advice when you need it most, the legal profession is filled with people whose everyday acts of kindness and support deserve recognition.

But in the rush of deadlines, hearings and responsibilities, how often do we stop to acknowledge them?

Gratitude is more than a kind gesture. It creates stronger connections, encourages collaboration and reminds us that we are part of a community invested in one another's success.

And sometimes, the smallest gestures leave the biggest impressions.

We hope you have a great Mindful Monday, from our Attorney Wellness Section.

Getting ready to clean out your closets? Before you pack away or donate those winter coats, jackets, hats, gloves, and scarves, consider setting them aside for a great cause!

The DCBA Lawyers Lending a Hand is gearing up for our annual Winter Coat Drive, and this year, we are partnering with 16 different organizations throughout DuPage County to help provide winter attire to individuals and families in need!

With so many organizations counting on our support, every donation makes a difference in helping our neighbors stay warm during the cold winter months.

Whether it's a coat your child has outgrown, a jacket you no longer wear, or winter accessories sitting in the back of your closet, your gently used items could make a big difference for someone in our community.

Collections begin Monday, November 2, 2026, at the Bar Center or at the ARC until Wednesday, November 18, 2026.

This week, we are highlighting Rachel Legorreta, Chair of the DCBA Civil Law Section and Editor-in-Chief of the DCBA Brief!

For Rachel, stepping into a leadership role was inspired by her passion for advocating on behalf of injured plaintiffs and the sense of community she found through the DCBA. Her involvement with the Civil Law Section has given her the opportunity to continue learning, growing, and connecting with fellow attorneys who share that same dedication to the profession.

Rachel believes one of the greatest benefits of the Civil Law Section is the variety of perspectives and practical knowledge members gain through its programming. With topics spanning all aspects of civil law, attorneys can walk away from each meeting with valuable insights they can apply to their own practices, regardless of their area of focus.

And Rachel’s involvement with the DCBA doesn’t stop there! She also serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the DCBA Brief, a role she is taking on for the second time! Rachel encourages fellow members to get involved with the publication and share their knowledge and experiences through contributing articles. If you've ever considered writing for the DCBA Brief, this is your sign!

Thank you, Rachel, for your continued dedication to the DCBA, your commitment to connecting and educating fellow attorneys, and your leadership in both the Civil Law Section and the DCBA Brief. We look forward to a great year ahead!

Success in the legal profession isn't just about individual achievements. It's also about the connections we build and the people who support us along the way.

A strong professional community provides opportunities to learn, grow, collaborate, and navigate challenges together. Even the smallest gestures, like offering advice or checking in with a colleague, can make a meaningful difference.

This week, remember that building connections isn't just good for your career. It's good for your well-being and the profession as a whole.

We hope you have a great Mindful Monday, from our Attorney Wellness Section.

Join us for our October Lawyers Lending a Hand Project at the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association in Carol Stream on Wednesday, September 28, 2026!

The WDSPA offers a variety of programs and events for people of all ages and abilities with disabilities and serves participants who have a disability. A number of participants function best when provided with visual schedules and other supports as these supports provide a concrete means for learning and communicating. . The priority project they have is preparing tote bags that contain small sensory items they use for camps with participants. They have approximately 80 soft backpack bags needed to do an 'inventory' of each to make sure that each bag has the exactly the required supplies and is ready for the next camp. So, the project would be going through each bag and then replacing what is missing.

Please email Haley at [email protected] to volunteer.
