Misa Stefen Koller Ward, LLP welcomes Ceyda Can Aksoy to the firm!

Ceyda brings an international background and a client-focused approach to the MSKW team. She is committed to providing efficient, resolution-oriented representation in workers’ compensation defense matters across California, representing insurance carriers, third-party administrators, and self-insured employers.

She has experience handling all aspects of workers’ compensation defense, including depositions, settlement negotiations, hearings, and trial preparation. Known for her attention to detail, Ceyda focuses on achieving favorable outcomes while minimizing costs and delays for clients.

Ceyda earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Cologne in Germany and was admitted to the California Bar in June 2024. She earned her LL.M. degree from the Antonin Scalia Law School and graduated at the top of her class. Fluent in four languages, Ceyda combines her academic training and international experience to offer clients a well-rounded legal analysis and perspective.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and their two orange tabbies, gardening, baking sourdough bread, and travelling.

Welcome to MSKW Cristina!

Cristina Martinez-Thompson is a Senior Attorney who brings 19 years of Workers’ Compensation experience to MSKW.

Prior to joining MSKW, Mrs. Martinez-Thompson acquired a vast amount of knowledge and experience as In-House Counsel for a major insurance company during her 14-year tenure. She represented employers and insurers in all aspects of workers’ compensation litigation including case analysis, depositions, hearings, trials, cross-examination of medical experts, and settlement. Prior to defense work, Mrs. Martinez-Thompson represented injured workers and took cases as far as necessary to obtain compensation for her clients.

During law school, Mrs. Martinez-Thompson interned at the Orange County District Attorney's Office where she analyzed evidence in felony cases as well as identified witnesses to testify at trial. She assisted the prosecutors with developing legal theories for trial and provided memos on legal research issues.

For the past 20 years, Mrs. Martinez-Thompson has also volunteered her time and currently serves as a Board of Directors Member for a Foster Family Agency.

Mrs. Martinez-Thompson prioritizes creating a balance between career and family. She and her husband stay quite busy raising a teenaged girl, tweenaged boy, as well as a 2-year-old German Shepherd/Golden Doodle fur baby named Charlie. On weeknights and weekends, you can find Mrs. Martinez-Thompson at the volleyball or basketball court, on the track, or on the football field.

She enjoys shopping, binge-watching murder mystery documentaries, baking with her daughter or making Sephora runs, making Panda Express runs with her son, and strives to maintain interest in her husband’s Netflix shows.

Misa Stefen Koller Ward, LLP welcomes senior litigation associate Gabriela Guzman!

Gabriela Guzman is a Senior Attorney who brings over 10 years of Workers’ Compensation experience to the firm. Prior to joining MSKW, Ms. Guzman gained extensive experience by working at a statewide Workers’ Compensation firm as well as experience working as in-house counsel for a major insurance company. She has extensive litigation experience in all aspects of the defense of workers’ compensation claims, ranging from taking matters to Trial, including post-termination claims, independent contractor vs. employee status disputes, and thoroughly versed in deposition and cross-examination strategies. She successfully obtained a take-nothing decision on a continuous trauma claim by impeaching the applicant with the testimony provided at her deposition. In 2021, she became a Certified Workers’ Compensation Specialist.

Ms. Guzman received her undergraduate degrees in Political Science and Spanish from Pepperdine University and received the Award for Outstanding Political Science student for her graduating class. She received her Juris Doctorate degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. While in law school, she was able to assist Pro Per clients by volunteering at the school’s Law Clinic and gained first hand experience mediating domestic disputes and guardianship proceedings.

Outside of work, Ms. Guzman enjoys spending time with her husband and two very energetic children. Most weekends are spent either at soccer games, little league games or dance classes. She enjoys traveling, going to concerts and decompressing with a good Bravo show.

We are happy to announce that we have added an amazing attorney, Vince Arzaga, Esq. to our workers compensation defense litigation team!

Welcome aboard!

Vince, an associate attorney at MSKW, takes great pride in zealously shielding employers, insurance carriers and public entities in all aspects of workers' compensation litigation.

He earned his J.D. from Trinity Law School, ultimately graduating in the top 10% of his class. He went on to pass the California Bar Exam on his first attempt and is a current member of the Filipino-American Lawyers of Orange County.

In law school, he was a 7-time winner of the American Jurisprudence Award. Additionally, he received a grade-on invitation to become an editorial board member of the Trinity Law Review and served as a legal intern at the Orange County Rescue Mission.

Vince holds a B.S. in Criminal Justice and a minor in Forensic Science from California State University, Long Beach. As an undergraduate student, he studied criminalistics abroad at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland, United Kingdom.

Before becoming a lawyer, Vince was the top performing personal trainer at 24 Hour Fitness in Westminster. He also has experience in sales and tutoring.

In his free time, Vince enjoys reading, exercising, watching the Lakers and eating sushi.

Robert has over 11 years of workers’ compensation defense experience. He has extensive trial experience and has obtained numerous favorable decisions for clients. However, he believes the best claim defense starts before one is filed. He works closely with employers on instituting “best practices” to position future claims for the strongest defense achievable and educates on pitfalls in the California Labor Code.

Robert graduated valedictorian of his class at Western State College of Law in Fullerton, California. During law school he served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Nancy Wieben-Stock and was published by Law Review. He received his bachelor’s degree from University of California, Riverside in Political Science/Administrative Studies.

When not working, Robert enjoys spending time with his family—his beautiful wife, Megan, two sons, and their mischievous cat, Nightwish. Robert’s hobbies include hiking, and lawn maintenance (AKA golf).

MSKW is truly pleased to announce that senior litigation attorney, Christin Allen has joined our firm!

Christin have been practicing Workers Compensation defense for 20 years. She has been fortunate to represent a variety of clients including public entities and self-insureds, as well as insurance carriers and TPAs. She has always loved the field of Worker's Compensation, and recognizes that so much can be accomplished with a phone call. Whether it is a settlement, or a single issue resolution, she always strives to get a great result while minimizing the need for lengthy litigation.

Ms. Allen graduated from Cal Poly Pomona, with a degree in Political Science. Thereafter, she earned her Paralegal certificate at the University fo LaVerne and graduated law school at Western State University College of Law, earning her J.D. degree.

She worked full time in retail and in government while going through school.

Ms. Allen recognizes the value of effective time management and focus.

She is fortunate to get to spend her free time with her husband, Erik, her three cats, and her family. She loves to attend concerts, go to coffee shops, and travel the United States (Mt. Rushmore with her Dad, and Colonial Williamsburg were two of her favorties). Anyone who has known her for more than 5 minutes will also know that she has a special passion for the best band to have ever existed, Duran Duran.
