Divorce can bring a lot of uncertainty, and one of the best ways to reduce stress is by getting your financial information organized early. Having important records in one place can help you better understand your financial situation, make informed decisions, and feel more confident throughout the process.

Five important documents to gather include:

• Tax returns
• Bank account statements
• Retirement account records
• Mortgage or property documents
• Credit card and loan statements

Taking the time to organize these documents now can help prevent delays, reduce unexpected surprises, and provide a clearer picture of your assets, debts, and financial responsibilities. Being informed is an important step toward protecting your interests and making decisions that support your future.

As the school year begins, many parents are signing their children up for sports, tutoring, music lessons, and other activities. While these opportunities are valuable, they can raise questions about who is responsible for the cost.

For divorced or separated parents, it's worth discussing in advance which activities both parents agree to support, how expenses will be divided, deadlines for registration and payment, and how reimbursements will be handled. Putting it in writing helps prevent misunderstandings — and keeps the focus where it belongs: on your child's success and well-being.

The start of a new school year can be an adjustment for children living between two homes. New schedules, different routines, and moving back and forth between households can sometimes feel overwhelming for everyone involved.

A few ways parents can help make the transition easier:

• Keep school-night routines as consistent as possible.
• Communicate about assignments, activities, and important school events.
• Avoid putting children in the middle of disagreements.
• Make sure your child feels comfortable talking about their feelings.
• Focus on stability and reassurance rather than perfection.

Children don't need co-parents to agree on everything. They need to know the adults in their lives are working together to support them.

When going through a divorce, understanding what happens to your property and assets is an important part of the process. In New York, property is generally categorized as marital or nonmarital, and knowing the difference can help you better understand what may be subject to division and what may remain separate.

Assets acquired during the marriage may be considered marital property, while certain assets such as property owned before marriage, inheritances, or individual gifts may be treated differently. Taking the time to understand your property rights can help you make informed decisions about your financial future.

As summer comes to an end, many families are preparing for back-to-school expenses, changing schedules, and a busier fall season. If you're adjusting to life after divorce, now can be a good time to check in on your budget.

A few things to review:

• Upcoming school, childcare, and activity expenses.
• Changes in household income or expenses.
• Shared costs outlined in your divorce agreement.
• Financial goals for the rest of the year.

A budget isn't about limiting yourself. It's about creating a plan that helps you move forward with confidence.

Divorce often pulls your attention in many directions—your children, financial decisions, legal matters, and the uncertainty of what comes next. During National Wellness Month, it's important to remember that your well-being deserves attention too.

A few ways to prioritize yourself:

• Give yourself permission to heal at your own pace.
• Lean on friends, family, or a trusted support system.
• Focus on small, manageable goals instead of trying to rebuild everything at once.
• Make time for activities that bring you peace, joy, and a sense of balance.

Divorce is the end of one chapter, not the end of your story. With time, self-care, and support, you can move forward and create a life that feels fulfilling again.

Summer vacations can be one of the highlights of the year for children, but when one parent refuses to return the kids at the agreed-upon time, what should be a relaxing summer break can quickly turn stressful and overwhelming.

If you're facing this situation, it's important to keep communication calm and focused on the children, review your parenting agreement and vacation schedule, document missed exchanges and important conversations, and avoid putting your children in the middle of the conflict. The best co-parenting plans start with clear expectations before summer begins — but when those plans aren't followed, knowing your options matters.

If your ex isn't honoring your custody or vacation agreement, we can help you understand what steps to take next. Contact Simonetti & Associates for a free consultation.

When a marriage is no longer working, moving out may seem like the obvious next step. But before you leave, it's important to understand how that decision could affect your future.

A few things to keep in mind:

• Moving out can impact parenting and financial arrangements.
• Important documents should be gathered before you leave.
• Major decisions are best made with a clear plan, not in the heat of the moment.
• In some situations, a spouse who moves out for an extended period may create grounds for a divorce claim based on abandonment.

Taking time to understand your options now can help you avoid complications later.

Summer on Long Island means beach days — and for co-parenting families, a little coordination can make all the difference between a smooth day and a stressful one.

A few things that help:

- Share the plan. Let your co-parent know which beach, roughly when, and when you'll be back. It avoids confusion around the next handoff, dinner, or bedtime.
- Keep a duplicate beach bag at each home — sunscreen, swimsuits, towels, water shoes, a change of clothes — so nothing important gets stuck at the other house when plans shift.
- Be flexible with swaps when the weather cooperates. If your co-parent has the kids on a perfect beach day and yours is rainy, offering to trade is usually met with a similar offer.
- Once the kids are at the shore with one parent, let them enjoy it. The guilt-text from the beach doesn't help anyone.
- Consider sharing a Jones Beach or town beach pass to simplify parking and access, regardless of which parent is driving that day.

Co-parenting works best when both adults remember the same thing: it's the kids' summer too.
