We are honoured to welcome Allison Forsyth as the keynote speaker for our 2026 Supporting Survivors of Sexual Abuse Conference: Fixing Broken Systems.

A 2-time Olympian and 8-time National Champion in alpine skiing, Allison is also a survivor of sexual abuse within the sport system. She has turned that lived experience into ground-breaking change as the founder of Generation Safe and Safe Sport Officer at Canada Soccer, leading the trauma-informed implementation of Safe Sport practices from the national to grassroots level.

Her keynote, "Prevention, Accountability, and Culture Change in Sport," will explore how institutions can better protect participants and create safer environments for athletes.

Join us at this year's hybrid conference to hear her insights firsthand. Learn more and register today at the link below.

Throughout June, we honour National Indigenous History Month, a time to celebrate the diverse histories, heritage, and cultures of First Nations, Inuit, and MΓ©tis peoples across Canada.

At Jellinek Ellis Gluckstein Lawyers, this month calls us to pause, listen, and learn. We recognize the resilience, wisdom, and lasting contributions of Indigenous communities, and we remain mindful of the path toward reconciliation that we all share.

It's a meaningful time to grow our understanding of the stories and lived experiences that continue to shape the communities we call home.

Our commitment doesn't end when June does. We are dedicated to building respect, understanding, and genuine inclusion every single day.

When you bring an institutional abuse claim forward, you're not only confronting the person who harmed you. You're holding the institution that failed to protect you accountable.

That includes schools, churches, sports organizations, and foster care systems, places meant to keep people safe.

Senior Counsel Linda O'Brien brings 30 years of legal experience and a deeply trauma-informed, compassionate approach to this work. She takes the time to understand your story, walk you through what to expect, and advocate fiercely on your behalf.

Hear Linda explain how institutional abuse claims work and what genuine survivor support looks like. Watch the full video at the link below.

Trauma shapes how clients communicate, make decisions, and are perceived, and understanding that is essential to effective, ethical legal practice.

On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Senior Counsel Simona Jellinek will present on Trauma Informed Lawyering as part of Module 5: Hot Topics, Case Law and Trends, within The Osgoode Professional Development Certificate in Consent, Capacity and Substitute Decision Making.

Drawing on her extensive experience, Simona will unpack how trauma can affect a client's capacity, instruction-giving, and credibility, offer guidance on recognizing trauma symptoms in clients, and explore how to lead with civility and empathy in trauma-heavy environments.

We're proud to see Simona contributing her insights to a conversation that truly matters for clients and the profession alike.

The systems built to protect survivors sometimes become the very ones that fail them.

This September, we're starting a conversation that needs to happen, and we want you in the room.

We're proud to present Supporting Survivors 2026: Fixing Broken Systems, a full-day hybrid conference bringing together advocates, legal professionals, frontline workers, and community voices to confront the systemic failures affecting survivors of abuse across Canada, and to explore what real, lasting change can look like.

The Supreme Court of Canada has recognized a new tort of intimate partner violence. This landmark decision in Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia marks a vital step forward for survivors, as the Court now officially acknowledges coercive control as a distinct civil wrong.

This ruling means that behaviours like isolation, emotional manipulation, and financial abuse can directly form the basis of a civil lawsuit. Survivors no longer have to squeeze their experiences into older legal categories that focus only on single incidents of physical or psychological harm.

We know that navigating the legal system takes immense courage. Senior Associate Erin Ellis's latest blog explains what this new tort requires and how it provides another path to justice for those considering civil claims.
