Introducing PD15’s 2026 summer class of law graduates, fresh after taking the July Florida Bar exam! These soon-to-be-lawyers are excited to get in the courtroom and showcase their talents. Some are joining us from across the country, while others are coming back to the city that raised them. Ten of them are CLI’s or practicing attorneys, and five are returning to us after previously participating in our intern program.

Thank you to our Youth Defenders Ingrid Abello and Perry Thurston and to Chief Maegan Young for volunteering their time with the H.O.P.E. Youth Camp put on by Love, Hope & Healing Inc. The camp is a multi-week program provided by one of our favorite community partners that provides middle and high school students with valuable opportunities for hands-on career exploration, skilled trades training, leadership development, and personal growth.

Our Office knows well just how effective public defenders are as advocates for their clients, but it’s nice to see that this has been shown empirically as well.

PD-15 is so fortunate to have support divisions that really make our office function and provide the best service we can for our clients. We’re lucky to bolster those offices with summer interns as well:

Dayjien Soto has been working with the operations team to provide day-today operational support as needed to make sure staff have what they need to do their jobs. A Palm Beach State College student, enrolled in the HVAC program, Dayjien has also volunteered at the Faith Formation Program as a volunteer group leader where he supervised and guided children in a structured setting.

Sharath Kukeswaran is an intern with our information technology team and is currently a student studying for his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a minor in Intelligent Robotic Systems. His skills include programming and development and he possesses credentials including AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner and AWS Certified Solutions Architect. He has also participated in IT, AI, and financial internships.

Aubrey Wendel is our social services intern. Aubrey comes to us from Florida State University where he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in criminology. He possesses retail experience as a manager, a barista, and barista trainer.

PD-15 is fortunate to have another great class of summer legal interns who have been doing great work for our clients.

Braden Pajunen is a St. Thomas University College of Law rising 2L. A Canadian citizen with extensive volunteer experience there, Braden studied environmental sciences at the Concordia University of Edmonton.

Klaudia Quinones is also a rising 2L from St. Thomas University College of Law and is a participant in the Palm Beach County Bar Association’s Advancing Opportunities Internship program. Prior to law school, Klaudia worked as an office supervisor in a high-volume traffic and criminal defense firm and worked as a legal assistant at a pre-litigation personal injury firm. Klaudia studied political science at Florida International University and Palm Beach State College.

Sydney Ross is a rising 3L from Florida International University - College of Law. The first and youngest of four siblings to attend college, Sydney possesses a commitment to criminal and public defense. As an undergraduate, Sydney attended the University of Southern California, where she focused on Political Science with a concentration in Law and Human Rights. She is on the FIU Law Trial Team and has been a judicial intern, a legal intern at a private firm and the LA County Public Defender’s Office, and a teaching assistant with the USC Prison Educational Project, “Writing and Identity.”

Stephanie Barry is a rising 2L from Vanderbilt University Law School where she is involved in groups focused on mock trial, women in law, criminal law, legal aid, tennis, and first-generation law students. She received her undergraduate degree from Boston college where she studied Psychology and English with a minor in Management for Social Impact and the Public Good and was also involved in mock trial there. She has been a litigation paralegal at a private firm and had numerous internships including one with the Boston College Law Innocence Program.

Sharon DeAzevedo — following work at the Transportation Security Administration, English tutoring, and her undergraduate studies at the Stony Brook University — comes to PD-15 as a rising 2L from Albany Law School. She had increasing levels of responsibility at TSA, possesses a TEFL Certificate from Florida State University, and is fluent in Brazilian Portuguese.

Zoey Chotiner is a rising 2L at Shepard Broad Law School - Nova Southeastern University. As a University of Miami undergraduate, Zoey studied Microbiology & Immunology and Criminology with a minor in Health Management and Policy. HB 991 was signed into law in April and requires the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to include whether a person is a U.S. citizen on their Florida driver’s license or Florida identification card.

If you currently have a valid Florida driver’s license or ID card, you are not required to obtain a new card immediately and existing licenses remain valid until their expiration.

Our office is recommending clients to obtain a U.S. Passport Card to use as a backup ID in the event of confiscation (or just to have a good backup ID) because:
• It is REAL ID-compliant.
• It is significantly cheaper than a passport book.
• It provides privacy. Unlike a driver's license, the passport card does not display your home address on the card and it lacks a barcode on the back that could be scanned to reveal your personal data.
• It is a backup ID and is an excellent form of identification in the event a driver's license is lost or one wants to leave a passport book in a hotel safe while traveling abroad.
