What surprises clients most?

How long an investigation can last.

Many people expect answers in days or weeks. In reality, some criminal investigations—particularly federal investigations—can continue for months or even years before a charging decision is made.

During that time, investigators may review documents, interview witnesses, analyze digital evidence, execute search warrants, or issue subpoenas. Just because you haven't heard anything doesn't necessarily mean the investigation has ended.

"If I cooperate, they'll leave me alone."

It's a belief we've heard from many people over the years.

In one case, an individual came to our firm after already speaking with investigators. He believed that answering their questions and cooperating would quickly resolve the situation.

Instead, as the investigation progressed, he realized his statements had become part of the evidence being used against him.

This is a common misconception. Many people think that if they're honest and have nothing to hide, the best course of action is to explain everything. But investigations are designed to gather information—not to give someone the opportunity to clear up misunderstandings.
