When a parent signs a permission slip for a school field trip, they are placing an extraordinary amount of trust in the schools, facilities and adults responsible for their child’s safety.

Fourteen-year-old E’Mari Marshall-Woodard never came home from his end-of-year field trip.

A lawsuit filed on behalf of E’Mari’s family alleges serious safety failures at the Granby resort where he drowned, including dangerous overcrowding, inadequate supervision and other conditions that compromised the safety of children in and around the pool.

This case is about accountability for E’Mari and his family. But it also carries a message that extends far beyond one case: When children are entrusted to our care, their safety must always come first.

RisCassi & Davis, P.C. attorneys Paul Iannaccone and Sean Stokes, in association with The Freeman Law Firm, are representing the family of 14-year-old E’Mari M. Marshall-Woodard in a newly filed wrongful death lawsuit arising from his drowning at High Meadow Resort in Granby, Connecticut.

According to the complaint, more than 800 students from multiple school districts were at the resort on June 10, 2026, for school field trips. The lawsuit alleges that more than 150 students were permitted into a pool with a maximum capacity of 105 that day and that inadequate staffing, supervision and safety measures contributed to the conditions in which E’Mari drowned. The complaint further alleges that the pool had not received the required annual authorization to open for the season and that, two days after E’Mari’s death, the Farmington Valley Health District identified multiple deficiencies and ordered the pool to remain closed pending further inspection.

“When parents send their children on a school field trip, they have every right to expect that basic safety rules will be followed and that their children will come home safely,” said Attorney Paul Iannaccone.

The lawsuit brings wrongful death claims based on negligence and recklessness and seeks accountability for E’Mari and his family.

Connecticut is updating its distracted driving laws to make it clear that distracted driving isn’t limited to texting or making a phone call. Holding or supporting your phone while driving is prohibited, including using it to scroll.

And remember: Connecticut’s distracted driving rules apply even when you’re stopped in traffic or sitting at a red light. The safest habit is also the simplest one: put the phone down before you put the car in drive.

Distracted driving continues to be a serious issue on Connecticut roads. In 2023 alone, Connecticut recorded more than 5,200 crashes involving distracted driving, resulting in 12 deaths and 78 serious injuries.
