You're named executor of a parent's estate. You spend months handling paperwork, paying bills, dealing with banks, managing property and making sure everything gets distributed correctly.

Then someone tells you that you're entitled to be paid.

Would you take the money?

Many executors feel guilty about accepting compensation because it can feel like they're taking inheritance away from the rest of the family. But there's another way to look at it:

You're not receiving extra inheritance. You're being paid for doing a job.

Your executor doesn’t have to be a lawyer or an accountant.

They do need to be responsible, trustworthy, organized, and willing to get things done.

Taxes can be handed to a CPA. A house can be sold with help from a realtor. Legal questions can go to an attorney.

The bigger question is whether the person you choose will recognize when they need help and actually follow through.

If you are the beneficiary of a property, you don't just automatically assume the deed to that home. There's still a process that needs to take place and sometimes that gets overlooked.

While there's not a deadline to take care of an estate as an executor, it's in your best interest to get things moving because it can make your job more difficult down the road if you wait and wait.

Just because the house was left to you doesn’t mean it’s legally yours yet.

If an estate is never properly settled, the problem can sit quietly for years, until someone tries to sell, refinance, change insurance, or pass the property to the next generation.

And if the intended heir dies before the first estate is finished? You could be looking at double probate.

🎧 This episode explains why waiting can turn a simple estate into a much bigger mess.

It's not uncommon for a parent to help a child purchase a home and make them responsible for the mortgage, but it can create some estate planning questions once it's time to factor in the equity.

Ohio is fortunate to have a Transfer on Death provision for vehicles. Not every state has that. But it doesn't solve the problem if you have multiple children and you're trying to divide things equally.

You bought a house for your child. They’re making the payments. But the house is still in your name.

How do you make sure they get credit for the equity they’ve built without creating an unfair inheritance for their siblings?

The answer may come down to how the remaining mortgage is handled in the estate plan.

🎧 This week's show explains how to keep the arrangement clear, fair, and flexible.
