The Oakland County Prosecutor has concluded that the fatal shooting by Royal Oak police of a 20-year-old resident was "lawful self-defense." In a prior post, I voiced concern that the killing of unarmed suspects at the hands of law enforcement may deviate from the American ethic of due process. This recent decision only deepens that concern as it appears that the officer has been exonerated without due process. Deciding if the officer's use of deadly force was justified ought to be left to an impartial jury—exactly how it was envisioned in the Sixth Amendment.
