In Florida, a parent or guardian who signs a minor's driver's license application may be held jointly and severally liable for damages caused by the minor's negligent or willful misconduct while driving, subject to applicable law.

Another golf cart accident in our community. Teens injured and neighbors concerned. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families involved.

Here is some info to help keep you and your family safe while out on your golf cart:

Florida has introduced new laws that could impact how and where you drive your golf cart. Staying informed about these updated regulations is essential to avoid fines and keep your ride legal.

Updated Florida Statute § 316.212(7)(b) has introduced stricter requirements. All golf cart operators on public roads must now carry a valid government-issued photo ID. Operators under 18 years old must have a learner’s permit or driver’s license to legally drive a golf cart on public roads. Because accidents involving minors have been on the rise, these rules address concerns about inexperienced drivers, particularly in areas with mixed traffic, like areas in our Wesley Chapel community.

Under Florida Statute §316.212, golf cart must have the following safety requirements:

Efficient brakes
Safe tires
A rearview mirror
Red reflector warning devices

In Florida, insurance isn’t mandatory for traditional golf carts, though it is highly recommended. Optional policies can include liability coverage, collision coverage, and protection against theft or vandalism. However, this exemption doesn’t shield owners from liability for damages or injuries, leaving them personally responsible for medical bills, property damage, or legal costs.

Make sure your teen knows the rules of the road and Florida laws, specifically regarding golf carts before giving them the keys.
