We are pleased to announce the winner of the $2,500 Melrose Law Scholarship is Matthew Thomas from Jackson County! Mr. Thomas plans to attend WCU to obtain a degree in Business Management.

The Melrose Law Scholarship asked graduating seniors to submit a video to show young people the dangers of driving under the influence. If we can keep prevent DWI accidents, we can all do our part to save lives.

Whether you are hiring a contractor, booking a wedding venue, or buying something expensive, the very best advice we can give you is to get your agreement in writing signed by the other party. When things don't turn out as expected the first thing we ask is whether the agreement is in writing. Breaches of written contracts are often resolved quickly. When it is a "handshake" deal, all bets are off who the jury will believe. If the other party refuses to put it in writing, walk away from the deal.

We handle legal malpractice cases and I am often surprised when the lawyers who are being investigated refuse or delay turning over their files to their former client. The NC Rules of Professional Conduct explicitly state the file is the personal property of the client, and refusal to deliver the file to the client will result in State Bar disciplinary action. Clients faced with a reluctant lawyer who is refusing to turn over their file should immediately get advice from an independent attorney.

Iryna's Law which now prohibits many pretrial releases of Defendants charged with violent crimes has resulted in overcrowding of local jails. The burden to pay for jail space has fallen on local government since these people are not in the state prison system. The primary funding mechanism for local jails and the impact of this law is property taxes and homeowners are the ones who are paying. WLOS article in comments.

We are seeing many more dog bite cases with these dogs having a prior history of aggression and viciousness. Failure by the owner to adequately secure and restrain a known vicious dog will result in civil liability including potential punitive damages.
